Dennis Schroder: Sacramento Kings Interested in Hawks PG?
Tuesday afternoon, ESPN.com’s Chris Broussard reported that the Sacramento Kings are supposedly interested in trading for Atlanta Hawks point guard Dennis Schroder.
Broussard’s report also indicated that Sacramento has interest in free agents Jeremy Lin and Rajon Rondo, and are scouting trades for point guards Ty Lawson, Jrue Holiday, as well as Schroder. Sacramento lacks depth at point guard, and Ty Lawson remains the most likely option for the Kings given his past relationship with George Karl in Denver.

Dennis Schroder had a breakout season for the Atlanta Hawks in 2015, averaging 10 points per game coming primarily off the bench, coupled with 4.1 assists per game.

Under the ownership of Vivek Ranadive, the Sacramento Kings have become one of the more eccentric organizations in the NBA. Ranadive inexplicably fired Head Coach Mike Malone a third of the way into last season during a time when the Kings were still in playoff contention.
The Kings hired George Karl as head coach near the end of last year’s campaign and gave him control of the front office. Now media reports suggest that Ranadive’s confidence in Karl has soured, with rumors swirling that Karl is shopping All-Star Center DeMarcus Cousins against Ranadive’s wishes.
It makes sense that the Kings would be interested in the Atlanta Hawks fearless young point guard. Dennis Schroder excels at penetrating to the basket and shows the promise of becoming a very effective passer for years to come.
Dennis Schroder’s game does need refinement, as his erratic and careless behavior became a liability on both ends of the floor for the Atlanta Hawks during the postseason. He became increasingly impatient in the playoffs, costing the Hawks key possessions with absent-minded turnovers.
Schroder was the primary back-up to Jeff Teague last season, and only at the age of 21, has a high developmental ceiling. I’m sure that the Kings are aware of this, and believe that he could be the point guard of the future for the club while playing alongside Darren Collison.
I’m also sure that the Atlanta Hawks also share this same belief and plan to have Schroder has the heir apparent to Jeff Teague, whose contract runs out in 2017. With some more tooling and hard work, Dennis Schroder can become a very good player — it will just take patience from the Atlanta Hawks and fans alike for him to fully realize his potential.
Stay tuned for more updates on the Atlanta Hawks and what transpires during the NBA Free Agency period.
