Atlanta Braves Defeat Nationals 4-1 in Wisler’s Start
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves defeat the Washington Nationals 4-1 Wednesday night after a lengthy rain delay. Tonight’s win snaps a 9-game skid to the division rival Nats. The Braves dug the long ball tonight with back-to-back homers in the bottom of the fourth by AJ Pierzynski and Juan Uribe, making it 3-0 Braves. Atlanta’s starter Matt Wisler even helped himself at the plate with an RBI single to the right side in the fourth to score Kelly Johnson to make it 4-0 Braves.

This was a great team victory for the Atlanta Braves. You could tell from the first pitch that Atlanta did not want to lose 10 games in a row to Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals. Matt Wisler rebounded nicely in his third Major League start. He pitched 5.1 innings of one hit baseball and earned his second career victory tonight.

Wisler was effectively wild to say the least, striking out 6 while walking 5. At least when he missed the plate, he missed down in the zone. I’ve been impressed with Matt’s command of his four pitches as most 22-year olds can’t say that they can retire MLB hitters in four different ways. I’ll the inefficiencies on the mound with Wisler tonight because he was pretty unhittable this evening.
The Atlanta Braves’ pitching staff held the Nationals to only 4 hits tonight. Only Nick Masset struggled today among the Braves’ pitchers, allowing two hits and an earned run in 0.2 innings. David Aardsma and Jim Johnson continue to pitch well for the Braves. Aardsma’s ERA on the year is 1.23 and Johnson recorded his 19th hold tonight.
And something happened tonight that hasn’t happened since April: Jason Grilli pitched a 1-2-3 inning, recording 22nd save at around midnight EDT. Grilli struck out two Nationals and lowers his ERA to just above 3.00 on the season (3.03). It was the best save he has had with Atlanta since the first week and a half of the season. Hopefully that is a sign of good things to come for Jason Grilli as our closer.

The back-to-back home runs in the 4th inning by Pierzynski and Uribe got me out of my seat. This team hit 5 HR’s all last month. I didn’t think the 2015 Atlanta Braves were capable of going deep in consecutive at-bats. Nationals SP Doug Fister grooved two pitches right down the plate to AJ and Juan. They are too good of mistake-pitch hitters for Fister to get away with poorly located pitches.
I’m proud of the Braves today for keeping their composure after a two-hour rain delay and beat the leader in their division. This team continues to fight even when its best player is on the Disabled List. Though it will be a challenge, Manny Banuelos will make his Braves debut tomorrow versus the best pitcher on the Planet the last few weeks Max Scherzer. Wouldn’t it be great to get a series victory over rival Washington? With it tied up at a game apiece, I’m telling you there’s a chance.
