Atlanta Braves Take on Brewers at Miller Park

The Atlanta Braves have won 4 of their last 6 games in their series victories over both the Washington Nationals and the Philadelphia Phillies.  Atlanta (40-42) looks to continue their luck when the ball club heads to Wisconsin to take on the last place Milwaukee Brewers of the National League Central (36-48).

Tonight’s starters are rookie righthander Matt Wisler (2-1, 2.60 ERA) for the Atlanta Braves and veteran Kyle Lohse (5-9, 6.24 ERA) for the Milwaukee Brewers.  Wisler has been great in two of his three big league starts for the Braves this year.  Matt seems like he is a much more developed pitcher than what you would expect out of a 22-year old.

  • Wisler appears to have four plus pitches that he can command in all parts of the strike zone.  In his third start of the season, he allowed just one hit and retired a career best six strikeouts.  Let’s hope that his disappointing start at Nationals Park on June 25th was just an anomaly.

Though he is about to make only his fourth big league start, I believe that Matt Wisler has staying power in the 2015 Atlanta Braves rotation, meaning I doubt that he will pitch for AAA Gwinnett in anything other than an injury rehabilitation start from here on out.

Tomorrow night’s slate of pitchers are young LHP Manny Banuelos (0-0, 0.00 ERA) for the Braves and veteran righty Matt Garza (4-10, 5.55 ERA) for the Brew Crew.  Banuelos had a terrific MLB debut, striking out 7 while only allowing 2 hits in 5.2 scoreless innings against Max Scherzer and the Washington Nationals.  The only reason Manny left the game relatively early was that he was suffering from cramps and dehydration in the top of the 6th inning Thursday night.

Being that Miller Park has a retractable roof, I figure that Banuelos won’t face the same levels of humidity in Milwaukee Tuesday night.  I am very much looking forward to Manny Banuelos second career start for the Atlanta Braves.  With Milwaukee’s misfortunes this season, I don’t see any reason Banuelos can’t give the Atlanta Braves his first career quality start tomorrow night.

And on Wednesday afternoon’s series finale, Julio Teheran (6-4, 4.60 ERA) squares off with Mike Fiers (4-7, 3.83 ERA).  Teheran is coming off a very solid last start for the Braves, going seven shutout innings against the Philadelphia Phillies Friday night.  Though Julio has been massively disappointing on the road for the Braves this season, I feel that Teheran will throw a great game for the Braves Wednesday afternoon.

Atlanta is in the midst of a favorable part of their schedule.  The Braves just took two of three from Philly and should the Braves pull off a rare road sweep, Atlanta will find itself over .500 yet again this season.  However, while I do believe that Atlanta wins this away series against the Brewers, the Atlanta Braves will have to wait until the team heads to Coors Field to play the Colorado Rockies this weekend before the team moves above .500.  I think Atlanta takes two of three in Miller Park this week.  Go Braves!
