On Monday night, the MLB announced the pitchers and reserves for the 2015 All-Star Game on July 14 in Cincinnati.

Unsurprisingly, the Atlanta Braves had only one selection to the National League All-Star Squad — starting pitcher and ace Shelby Miller.

Shelby Miller certainly deserves to represent the Atlanta Braves at the mid-summer classic, owning a 2.07 ERA for the season and a 5-4 record.

Though Miller has arguably been the best player on a small-ball focused Atlanta Braves club thus far in 2015, there are other Braves players that could arguably make the case for being added to the National League roster.

  • Cameron Maybin, CF: The 2015 season has been the best campaign in the Braves center-fielder’s 8-year career. He is batting .300 as of 06 July, with 7 home-runs and 39 runs batted in. Though these numbers aren’t the most glamorous, especially when compared to other National League outfielders, Maybin’s offensive output is critical for the Atlanta Braves to succeed, and his presence means more to his team than most. The fact that he has been able to transform his career since he came to the Atlanta Braves in early April could have warranted a second look by NL Manager Bruce Bochy.
  • Nick Markakis, RF: The Atlanta Braves signed the 33-year-old right fielder this offseason, hoping his predilections to make contact with the ball would be in line with John Hart’s new vision for the club. Markakis’s presence has done exactly that. As of 04 July, Markakis was 5th in the National League in hits. With the likes of Andrew McCutchen, Buster Posey, and Bryce Harper having excellent seasons, it is a significant accomplishment for Markakis to produce those kinds of numbers. His lack of power was obviously a knock on his candidacy, but Markakis’s ability to consistently hit on a team lacking a prolific offense shouldn’t go unnoticed.

  • Freddie Freeman, 1B: The Atlanta Braves injured first-baseman was hitting .299, leading the Braves with 12 home-runs and 41 RBI’s before he succumbed to a wrist injury. No player means more to the Atlanta Braves’ offense than Freddie Freeman. It is clear that his presence in the lineup is dearly missed. Though he won’t come off the DL until after the All-Star Game, Freeman was on pace to make his third consecutive All-Star appearance. Let’s hope he can pick up where he left off once activated from the Disabled List.

The 86th MLB All-Star Game will be held at the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, OH on Tuesday, 14 July. Keep it here for more updates on the Atlanta Braves.
