Tonight has been a great night for soccer in Atlanta.  Though leaked by Club President Darren Eales on June 26th, Atlanta United FC was officially introduced as the name of the expansion Major League Soccer franchise set to begin play in Spring 2017 here in Atlanta.

Owner Arthur Blank, MLS Commissioner Don Garber, Club President Darren Eales and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra all spoke to the United’s founding members in a private event before the CONCACAF Gold Cup Semifinals being held across the street at the Georgia Dome.  At the end of the announcement the Atlanta United FC official logo was finally introduced.

While many felt lukewarm about the name’s unofficial leak several days ago, the marketing department of Atlanta United FC created an absolutely breathtaking logo.  With a perfect blend of red, black, and gold, a circular emblem, and a powerful Capital A, this is a brand the City of Atlanta can certainly be proud to rally behind.

It reminds me of Captain America’s shield but with an Atlanta-centric twist.  Arthur Blank did say that the club’s colors would feature red and black with some gold accents, in the manner of how the original Atlanta Falcons logo was to incorporate both the University of Georgia and Georgia Tech’s colors.  In my opinion, United’s emblem is as strong as any in the Atlanta region and hopefully it can become as iconic.

Blank said that he expects Atlanta United FC “to win Match 1 from Day 1.”  Uncle Arthur, as support group Terminus Legion refers to Blank, also stated that United has over 21,000 founding members.  That staggering number will only grow the closer we get to Spring 2017.  United tickets might just be the hottest tickets in town then.

Eales reiterated what Blank stated about ticket sales. “We’re on course to set a record for season tickets sold for an MLS expansion team.  Our Club President also said, “We’ve got a chance to make Atlanta United Atlanta’s team, that everyone can support.”

Technical Director and former Captain of the US Men’s National Team expressed United’s wish to create a strong soccer academy for the United here in Atlanta. “We’re going to try to be one of the best academies in the world.” The Greater Atlanta area is a hot bed for high school soccer talent.  With a top rate academy, Atlanta United FC can recruit, develop, and maintain the region’s best players.

I’m beyond thrilled to have a new team to cheer for in the city I love.  I can’t wait to buy some United gear and wear it all over town with pride.  This logo, the brand, the name, the identity, I can get behind all of it.  And that was the goal from the very beginning when deciding on this club’s name.  We are Atlanta.  We are United.
