Atlanta Braves Again Fall to Rockies 5-3
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves again drop a road game to the Colorado Rockies by the score of 5-3. Atlanta Braves lone 2015 All-Star Shelby Miller could not handle the altitude albatross that is Coors Field. Miller surrendered 5 earned runs on 11 hits in his 5 innings of work. Though he struck out 7 Colorado Rockies, Miller takes a 5-5 record and a 2.38 ERA into Cincinnati for next week’s All-Star festivities.

Atlanta never seems to give Shelby Miller much run support. The Atlanta Braves only runs tonight came on one swing of the bat when Kelly Johnson hit an opposite field three-run homer that scored Cameron Maybin and Nick Markakis in the top of the 6th inning.

Kelly Johnson has been a solid addition to the 2015 Atlanta Braves roster as a great utility player with strong power to all parts of the field. KJ’s three-run shot was his 9th homer of the year and he is now up to 32 RBI’s despite missing significant time due to an oblique strain earlier in the season.
The Bullpen pitched a strong three innings in Coors Field, allowing no runs and just one hit. Manny Banuelos was apparently scratched from his start Sunday as he will have an innings limit on him this year. Alex Wood will try again Sunday afternoon after throwing just two pitches yesterday before the two-hour rain delay.
Banuelos, Arodys Vizcaino and the new David Carpenter kept the game close but the Braves bats just couldn’t string together many hits tonight, only 8 this evening. It didn’t help that Colorado converted three double plays on the Braves this evening, including a strike him out, throw him out of Andrelton Simmons and Jonny Gomes.

It seems that the Coors Field is messing with the Braves’ heads the first two games of this series. The Atlanta outfield which normally plays very sound defense is struggling with the spacious grass of Coors Field. There were a few times tonight where Gomes, Maybin, and Markakis couldn’t get to a ball quick enough for their liking as the Rockies often hit gap shots and took the extra base on balls rolling to the fence. And then you have to consider the thin air with these frequent sprints. Perhaps Gomes, Maybin, and Markakis were a little gassed playing the outfield tonight.
Atlanta cannot finish above .500 before the All-Star Break this season with tonight’s defeat. The Atlanta Braves hope to buck the trend tomorrow afternoon when young RHP prospect Matt Wisler takes the mound versus arguably Colorado’s best starter Jorge De La Rosa. These first two games with the Rockies have certainly been close and interesting, but unfortunately Atlanta has come up short both times in this surprisingly low-scoring series in the Mile High City. Here’s to more runs than three tomorrow and Sunday!
