Atlanta Braves Lose to Rockies in Walkoff, Grilli Hurt
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves lose a heartbreaker Saturday afternoon to the Colorado Rockies 3-2 on a walk-off bloop single by Carlos Gonzalez. CarGo was responsible for all three of the Rockies runs this afternoon. Atlanta has yet to score more than 3 runs at Coors Field in any game this series. The Braves have now lost three straight to Colorado.

To make matters worse, it looks like Closer Jason Grilli is going to miss some serious time with an apparent ankle injury suffered in the bottom of the ninth. Grilli could not put any weight leg and needed a cart to get off the field. Fate would have it that our injured closer would be the pitcher of record tonight.

Both starting pitchers in today’s game threw six solid innings. Matt Wisler kept pace with Rockies Ace Jorge De La Rosa. Wisler struck out 7 Rockies and only allowed 2 earned runs in his no decision. I think that this might have been Matt Wisler’s best start in the Big Leagues. Giving up only two runs at Coors Field the first time there is an incredible accomplishment. Though he did walk three batters, he should feel very confident about his first half heading into the All-Star Break.
Atlanta had a rough afternoon at the plate, scoring only twice on solo homers and mustering just six base hits. Juan Uribe took De La Rosa’s offering deep to left center in the top of the second inning. It cut the Atlanta Braves deficit in half after a first inning two-run homer by Carlos Gonzalez. Uribe’s homer also came on the same day that his former team the Los Angeles Dodgers will host Juan Uribe Bobblehead Night. LA’s starting pitcher: former Atlanta Braves righthander Brandon Beachy.

Backup catcher Ryan Lavarnway crushed a De La Rosa pitch deep into the Braves bullpen in the top of the third inning. This was Lavarnway’s first home run since joining the Atlanta Braves in June. Though he is only hitting .178 on the season for Atlanta, Ryan has hit safely in five straight games for the Braves, albeit in sparse playing time.
This was no doubt a tough loss for the Braves. Atlanta has officially lost this road series to the Colorado Rockies. The Braves need to win tomorrow afternoon to avoid getting swept into the All-Star Break. Before struggling to score runs in Denver, Atlanta had won three straight series against National League opponents. Let’s just get into the All-Star Break before anything else bad happens to our team…
