I’d be lying to you if I said I was a lifelong fan of the Georgia Bulldogs. As the son of northern transplants like many of my peers, I had no real connection to the SEC let alone College Football in my youth. As a child growing up in suburban Atlanta in the 1990’s, I gravitated towards the Braves, Falcons, Hawks, and even the Thrashers (I hate the Winnipeg Jets) well before I had any attachment to college athletics.
That all changed when I chose to attend the University of Georgia as a freshman in August of 2008. After getting baked in the brutal Georgia sunshine in the home opener against Georgia Southern, watching the #1 ranked Dawgs take care of business Between the Hedges, I became a diehard fan of the Georgia Bulldogs football program.
The culture, the rivalries, the pageantry, the intensity, I never saw anything like it before in my life and watching countless games at Sanford Stadium forever changed the way I view sports. I don’t cry a lot but when I do, it’s usually the Dawgs fault.
It’s tough being a fan of the Georgia Bulldogs football team. Top talent all across the Southeastern United States choose to play the college ball for HC Mark Richt. Going into the last 7 seasons, at one point or another I believed that the Dawgs were going to win the SEC and contend for a National Title. But every single year, my heart shatters when the Dawgs come up short.
Since I went to Georgia, I’ve seen Alabama win three national titles and play in the inaugural College Football Playoff, Auburn win it all in 2010 and play for another in 2013, LSU play in a national championship, and arch rival Florida finish #1 in 2008. And here I am, looking at our schedule yearly and having to decide which two games the Dawgs will find a way to lose.
In an effort to try to shake some of this bad luck, I’ve decided that I will talk about the ten most painful losses I’ve personally experienced since becoming a Dawg in 2008. Keep in mind there is no wrong answer for the order of these games. Except #1 and #2. Those will NEVER change. Dawg Nation, let’s rally in collective sorrow. Fans of other teams, enjoy the Schadenfreude. Here…We…Go…
