With Kentucky being more of a basketball school and UGA being more of a football school, these Eastern Divisional foes have never really been the fiercest of rivals.  That and proximity, too.  It takes over 7 hours up I-75 to get to Lexington from Atlanta.  Of the many SEC fan bases I’ve interacted with, I really like UK football fans.  They enjoy tailgating as opposed to trash talking, probably because they Georgia will more often than not beat them on the gridiron.  It’s okay, UK.  You clobber us on the court.

But UGA’s loss to Kentucky in 2009 was especially painful because QB Joe Cox handed the Wildcats the game at home Between the Hedges.  I don’t recall the exact number but it felt like Cox threw a pick on every possession in the second half as UK clawed its way back into this ballgame.

What made this game extremely awkward is that I had some friends down from Lexington that weekend.  Here are two of my friends decked out in Big Blue Nation gear sitting with me in the UGA student as their team pulls off its biggest football upset in a decade.  I couldn’t believe my eyes that Kentucky was actually beating us at home.

It donned on me in that late November game that the 2009 Georgia Bulldogs were not a good SEC football team.  For as good as Joe Cox was against Arkansas in a shoot-out with Ryan Mallett earlier in the season, Cox was that bad that Saturday.  The shame of it all was that Georgia had a great offensive line that season.  Too bad quarterback play, running the football, and defensive coordinator issues cost the Dawgs five games that season.  Of all the Dawgs losses I’ve experienced in 7 years, this one forever haunts me because like Luke Wilson in Anchorman, “I did not see that coming.”
