Georgia Bulldogs: First Look at 2015 Depth Chart

facebooktwitterreddit

Even though the Georgia Bulldogs will not officially meet with the media at SEC Media Days in Hoover, Alabama until Thursday, Head Coach Mark Richt has released his first official depth chart for the 2015 Georgia Bulldogs Football Team.  At first glance, there are several questions answered about whom is ahead of whom in many key position battles.

Right off the bat, it seems that RS Sophomore Brice Ramsey is ahead of RS Junior Faton Bauta at the starting quarterback position.  With UVA Junior transfer Greyson Lambert‘s name not present on the depth chart, perhaps this current ranking is strictly off 2015 Spring Practice.

  • Even if Ramsey is ahead of Bauta and Lambert now, it still doesn’t feel definite.  Hopefully Brice can build his confidence on this depth chart reveal as he looks to enter his first season as UGA’s starting quarterback.  But perhaps even more important, this way-too-early depth chart could further push Bauta or Lambert to try to overtake Ramsey this summer.

While this was the expected pecking order at QB heading into SEC Media Days, it still feels like Mark Richt and new OC hold all the cards as to who lines up under center for the Dawgs this fall.  The starting QB competition continues to heat up into the Dawg Day of Summer.

What shocked me the most about this initial depth chart reveal is that former starting LG Brandon Kublanow is according to this piece of paper, the Dawgs’ starting center heading into 2015.  Not that Kublanow can’t play center.  He actually thrived there in high school as the number two center prospect playing at Walton in 2013.  I just thought that Rich would have kept him a guard to keep continuity at four positions on the offensive line instead of just three.

Many thought that Sophomore Isaiah Wynn was the presumed favorite to win the starting center job out of Spring Practice.  Others, including myself, believed it was Senior Hunter Long’s for the taking.  Richt has Wynn listed at LG as a starter, playing alongside Kublanow on what will likely be a ferocious offensive line for the Dawgs this season.  While I don’t believe that the starting C competition is over by a long shot, I do like the idea of Wynn and Kublanow both starting beside each other on the Georgia Bulldogs’ offensive line.

The last part of the initial depth chart release that got my attention is that OLB Leonard Floyd can start at both the MIKE and SAM linebacker spots.  If figured since Jordan Jenkins‘ consistency strong performance at the JACK wouldn’t merit moving him anywhere in the linebacker group.  Perhaps OLB Coach Kevin Sherrer envisions that for UGA to get pass rushers Floyd, Jenkins, and Sophomore Lorenzo Carter on the field at the same time that somebody has to learn to play inside at least part of the time.

It appears that Floyd will get some snaps at ILB for the Georgia Bulldogs this fall.  Let’s hope that he improved in run stopping on the inside as he struggled at tackling tailbacks running off the guard’s shoulder when he was playing inside.

Keep in mind that this initial depth chart does not include players from the Recruiting Class of 2015 that did not enroll early.  DT Trenton Thompson and WR Terry Godwin will likely be major contributors for the Dawgs this fall as true freshman.  SEC Media Days continue all week from Hoover, Alabama.  Mark Richt and Seniors Jordan Jenkins, WR Malcolm Mitchell, and LT John Theus will speak to the media Thursday mid-morning to late-afternoon.  Until then, Go Dawgs!
