Atlanta Hawks: Top 5 Bench Players in 2016
By John Buhler
It’s happening. The rise of Dennis Schroder that is. In due time, I envision the young 21-year old point guard from Germany becoming a star floor general in the National Basketball Association. After a trial-by-fire rookie season in 2013-14, Schroder became a great sixth man for the Atlanta Hawks in 2014-15.
Coach Bud believes that Dennis has the potential to become this league’s next Tony Parker. Including Parker, Schroder grew up idolizing fellow German Dirk Nowitzki and All-Star PG Rajon Rondo in how he crafted his unique game. I loved how fearless Dennis would be in attacking the paint despite being usually the smallest guy on the court. It didn’t work all the time and it seemed stubborn in some games, but you have to enjoy the passion that Dennis Schroder plays with at the point.

While I’m not expecting as big of a leap in his play in Year Three as we saw in Year Two, I really think that Dennis Schroder can contend for the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year Award in 2016. He has a great handle of the basketball, is developing into a nice outside shooter, and is always a thorn in opposing point guards’ sides on defense.
Though still a work in progress as an NBA player, Schroder’s talent is obvious and he is definitely on the short list of top-tier backup point guards in the NBA. I can’t wait for it all to click for Dennis Schroder in 2016.
