Georgia Bulldogs: TEs to Thrive Under Schottenheimer
By John Buhler
The Georgia Bulldogs look to have another strong offense even after starting QB Hutson Mason’s graduation and former OC Mike Bobo’s promotion to a head coaching gig with the Colorado State Rams. Not only do the Dawgs return four starters on the offensive line and a have a deep stable of tailbacks to choose from including Heisman hopeful Nick Chubb, but UGA brings in an NFL mind into their coaching staff.

AD Greg McGarity and HC Mark Richt were able to pry former St. Louis Rams OC Brian Schottenheimer from Jeff Fisher’s staff in the NFL. Schotty has had his eyes on getting back into the college game after being a finalist for the Vanderbilt job that went to former Stanford DC Derek Mason. I think he really wants to get back into teaching fundamentals and possibly seeing if he can become a solid recruiter.

Dawn of the Dawg
Georgia won’t likely skip a beat on offense with Schottenheimer at the helm due to continuity stemming from Bobo’s pro style system. I do think that the Georgia Bulldogs will go a little more spread at times with Schottenheimer’s affinity for the short-to-mid range passing game. But that doesn’t mean that Schotty won’t run that darn ball!
But where I really think the Georgia Bulldogs’ offense takes off in 2015 is in two tight end sets. Sophomore Jeb Blazevich is the next star at Tight End U for the Dawgs and Senior Jay Rome looks to close out his UGA career with a bang in Schottenheimer’s offense. Having four solid TEs including RS Sophomore Jordan Davis and True Freshman Jackson Harris gives Schotty a ton of flexibility to mix and match in the TE passing game.
With a WR corps that is middle of the pack in the SEC, for the Georgia Bulldogs to dominate in the passing game the tight ends are going to have to contribute at a high level in 2015. Fortunately Brian Schottenheimer has a strong resume of tight end development at the professional level: Dustin Keller, Jared Cook, and Lance Kendricks. I have to believe that players will want to come play for a guy that coached Kendricks and Tavon Austin while with the Rams.

It will be interesting to how Brian Schottenheimer’s offensive system compares to the proven system of former OC Mike Bobo. I expect the offense to run the football close to 50% of the time. But I don’t think that Schotty’s passing attack will be as vertical as Bobo’s. Look forward to seeing plenty of targets to the Georgia Bulldogs’ tight ends this fall. Good things to come. Go Dawgs!
