Atlanta Braves Welcome the Dodgers to the Ted
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves look to rebound against a strong Los Angeles Dodgers team when LA comes to town for a three-game set. Atlanta, 3-7 in its last 10 games, are about to enter a very tough part of their schedule: 3 with LA, 3 at St. Louis, and 3 at Baltimore. Fortunately for the Atlanta Braves, neither Clayton Kershaw or Zack Greinke will start at Turner Field these next few days. So you’re telling me there’s a chance?

In my opinion, Atlanta not drawing either Kershaw or Greinke in the LA series gives the Braves their best chance to win a series before the trade deadline. I kind of like this year’s Atlanta Braves team but if Fredi Gonzalez‘s club can’t win any of the next three series, I’m afraid John Hart is selling off veterans by July 31st.

Tonight’s starters will be RHP Matt Wisler (3-1, 3.10 ERA, 21 K’s) for the Braves versus former Atlanta Brave RHP Brandon Beachy (0-1, 6.75, 2 K’s). Wisler continues to impress in his starts will great command of four pitches. I look forward to every Wisler start, not just because he has the making of a front line starter, but he’s a great reminder that the albatross Melvin Upton Jr. contract is no longer the Atlanta Braves’ obligation. Beachy is just now coming back from his second Tommy John surgery and it will be great to see Brandon pitching at the Big League level, albeit for somebody else.
LA trots out sends out LHP Brett Anderson (5-5, 3.17 ERA, 77 K’s) against Braves southpaw Alex Wood (6-6, 3.76 ERA, 80 K’s). Wood did not have a good last start of the first half, surrendering 7 earned runs in Coors Field. He’s hovered around .500 for the Atlanta Braves in his starts, but never seems to get any run support. It’s starting to become a trend with this powerless offense in Freddie Freeman‘s extended absence.
In the series finale with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Julio Teheran (6-4, 4.53 ERA, 91 K’s) squares off with Mike Bolsinger (4-3, 3.04 ERA, 71 K’s) in a Wednesday afternoon matinée. Teheran didn’t last five innings in his last start at home against Chicago Cubs Friday night. But this season, Julio has done a great job at home for the Braves as he hasn’t lost at the Ted this year. Perhaps Teheran can command his fastball in addition to his slider and pitch a gem Wednesday afternoon.

Atlanta needs to win this series, plain and simple. Taking more than a game in St. Louis seems almost impossible. Baltimore is a solid team and maybe Nick Markakis finally hits a home run in a homecoming of sorts back in Camden Yards. With each loss from now until the 31st, the Atlanta Braves are more likely to end up sellers at the trade deadline. No Greinke, no Kershaw. Let’s take two of three from the Dodgers at home. Go Braves!
