Iowa City, the Athens of the Big 10. Every year it seems like both UGA and Iowa make the Top 10 party schools in the country. I’ve heard the game day environment in Iowa City is electric and people go crazy in Kinnick Stadium.
With Georgia playing a healthy rotation of Nebraska and Michigan State in non-New Year’s Six Bowls (can’t lose thrice in a year…), why haven’t the Dawgs played the Hawkeyes recently? Like Mark Richt, Iowa HC Kirk Ferentz is long-entrenched coach and a family man. Kind of like the Oregon Ducks, the Iowa Hawkeyes promote from within.

Ferentz was the former Offensive Line coach for the legendary Hayden Fry. Fry brought toughness to a middling Big 10 team in the 1970’s. Coach Fry took the Pittsburgh Steelers logo and credibility to heart. Supposedly the visitors’ locker rooms in Kinnick Stadium were pink when Fry was coaching.
If you look across college football, there are so many disciples stemming from the Hayden Fry coaching tree. Kirk Ferentz, Bob Stoops, Bret Bielema, Barry Alvarez, Bill Snyder, and many more. Iowa is a powerhouse in developing NFL caliber offensive line talent. I would love to see UGA’s pass rush try to get after the well-protected QB’s in Iowa City.
Who knows? Maybe both teams are 8-4 in the same season and we play each other in Jacksonville, Tampa, or Orlando? I see a bowl game between UGA and Iowa coming in the next 7-8 years. Hopefully Richt and Ferentz will still be coaching then.
