Atlanta Braves Lose to Cards 1-0, No Run Support For Miller

I feel so bad for Atlanta Braves All-Star Starting Pitcher Shelby Miller.  He pitched an outstanding ball game for the Braves tonight against his former team the St. Louis Cardinals on the road as still loses.

The lone run scored in tonight’s pitchers’ duel between Shelby Miller and St. Louis’ Carlos Martinez was a sacrifice fly off the bat of rookie Stephen Piscotty to deep enough right field to score pinch runner Pete Kozma who tagged up from third base.  Atlanta drops the second game of the series to the Redbirds 1-0 and ultimately lose the series because of it.

  • Thank goodness Freddie Freeman is back in the Atlanta dugout because Shelby needs a hug.  He falls to 5-7 on the season with a 2.27 ERA.  Miller pitched seven excellent innings before the Cardinals’ bats finally came alive in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Outside of his near no-hit bid in South Beach, this was in my opinion the best game Shelby Miller pitched as a Brave.  The only thing that will magically make him feel better is ANY run support.

It’s gotten to the point where when I’m watching a game Shelby Miller starts, I assume that the Atlanta Braves will score 2 or fewer runs in that contest.  Like clockwork, the Braves bats continue to fall asleep and the offense cannot manufacture anything in Miller’s starts.  Hopefully the return of Freddie Freeman to the Atlanta Braves’ lineup can jumpstart some sort of offensive rhythm for a team that struggled mightily in his extended absence.

Atlanta actually out hit St. Louis 7 to 2 tonight but the Braves managed to ground out into four double plays.  Four double plays, how untimely.  It seemed like when the Atlanta Braves were on the verge of producing a run an inopportune grounder would find either St. Louis 2B Kolten Wong or SS Jhonny Peralta and the Cardinals would promptly turn two to put out the fire.

I’ll tip my cap to Carlos Martinez who pitched 8 scoreless innings for the Redbirds, allowing 6 hits, walking 1 and striking out 6 as well.  He’s made a smooth transition from the bullpen to the rotation for his skipper Mike Matheny.  Their entire pitching staff is the reason St. Louis looks like the favorites to win the National League as we are about to enter the final two months of the regular season.

Let’s hope that on John Smoltz‘s induction day into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY tomorrow afternoon that the Atlanta Braves can at least salvage a game in this tough road series before traveling east to play the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.
