Atlanta Braves Win Finale 3-2 Thanks to Garcia HR
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves salvage a rare road win against the MLB Best St. Louis Cardinals on Hall Of Fame Sunday by the score of 3-2. The good vibes coming from Cooperstown, NY on John Smoltz‘s induction day into the National Baseball Hall of Fame must have helped the Atlanta Braves top the Redbirds this afternoon.

Matt Wisler pitched a great ball game today, out-dueling 11-game winner All-Star RHP Michael Wacha. Wisler went 7 strong innings, limiting the Cardinals to 2 runs on 7 hits and 3 walks Sunday afternoon. Matt earned his 5th Major League victory in the series finale. He’s fearless out there on the mound, unafraid to compete against a World Series contender despite not having his best stuff today.

Backup Catcher Ryan Lavarnway continues to perform for the Atlanta Braves in even very limited action. He has hit safely in 7 straight starts for the Atlanta Braves. I really enjoyed his RBI double in the top of the third inning of Michael Wacha. Runs were at a premium this series and it was a pleasant surprise to see offensive production coming from our veteran backup backstop.
I think Atlanta was fortunate that Michael Wacha wasn’t on his A game this afternoon, too. Early on he seemed like he was grinding to have control of the strike zone. But he kept the Cards in the game until Adonis Garcia took him yard on a solo shot in the top of the sixth inning. That homer proved as the deciding run in today’s contest. It was Garcia’s first big league home run after being a career Minor Leaguer.

I’m glad that the Atlanta Braves were able to take a game in St. Louis considering how tough it is to play there on the road. The Cardinals rarely lose at home, 36-13 at Busch Stadium so far this season. Atlanta has gone 3-3 over the last two series against NL Pennant Contenders Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals. Hopefully the Braves can take this momentum into Baltimore when they take on the Orioles at Camden Yards tomorrow night.
Freddie Freeman is also back at first base for the Atlanta Braves, getting a hit in his first start coming of the Disabled List yesterday afternoon. I’m looking forward to Freeman playing well for the Braves down the stretch and hopefully RF Nick Markakis has a great homecoming of sorts when the Atlanta Braves take on his former team, the Baltimore Orioles in this next series. Today was a good day. Go Braves!
