Atlanta Braves Drop Opener to O’s In Extras 2-1

Though the Baltimore Orioles showed major respect to former O RF Nick Markakis in his return to Camden Yards, the Orioles got the last laugh against the Atlanta Braves tonight on Matt Wieters‘ walkoff solo home run in the bottom of the 11th inning of LHP Luis Avilan.  Atlanta dropped the interleague series opener in Baltimore by the score of 2-1.

This was a great game to watch as a baseball fan.  Starter pitchers Alex Wood and Kevin Gausman were dealing the whole night.  Wood went 7.1 innings allowing just 3 hits and 2 walks while striking out 7.  Gausman went 7.2 innings allowing 6 hits and walking 1 while striking out 5.  Both starters pitched over seven scoreless frames.  It’s a shame neither pitcher received any run support tonight in their quality starts.

  • Atlanta out hit Baltimore 9 to 7 tonight, including an opposite go-ahead solo shot off the bat of 3B Adonis Garcia.  Garcia has two homers in as many days since being called up from AAA Gwinnett after the Kelly JohnsonJuan Uribe traded with the New York Mets Friday evening.

Like Garcia, Nick Markakis had two hits tonight in what was very much a special night for him.  The always stoic Markakis nearly showed emotion for his gratitude from the Baltimore faithful after 9 great years with the Orioles.  Their constant applause of Nick Markakis should make Braves Country feel grateful to have a player like Nick on our roster for the foreseeable future.  He’s a pro’s pro that plays the game the right way.  The power will come back next season I’m sure.

Eury Perez is starting to play very well in leftfield for the Atlanta Braves.  Perez had three hits tonight, several great plays in the field, and recorded his first stolen base as a big leaguer.  I’ve heard about his foot speed on the base paths for some time and I’m glad he finally showcased it tonight.  At .272 on the year, I like Perez to start in left for us through the rest of the season and possibly into next year.

Jim Johnson didn’t do well in a return to his former team’s park tonight.  As a guy that had back to back 50 save seasons with the O’s, he couldn’t get it done in the ninth, blowing the Atlanta Braves’ slim 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly off the bat of SS JJ Hardy to score CF Adam Jones from third base.

Once the lead was lost, I could get the feeling that it would grow increasingly difficult to get another run on the Baltimore ‘pen, a unit that has actually been better than the Kansas City Royals since the end of April.  Failing to capitalize with runners on base in the 8th, 10th, and 11th innings proved costly as all Matt Wieters needed was two pitches from Luis Avilan to end tonight’s game in walkoff fashion.  It was a tough loss for the Atlanta Braves but I’ll take a competitive and entertaining game any day of the week, win or lose.
