Atlanta Braves Swept By O’s in 2-0 Shutout
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves were not able to take a game in their rare road series with the Baltimore Orioles as the O’s shut out Atlanta 2-0 in their series sweep. Though Mike Foltynewicz pitched a quality game for the Braves with six strong innings, the long ball got the best of him as a pair of solo shots were the only runs scored in the ball game.

Atlanta only mustered four hits tonight against Baltimore’s ace RHP Chris Tillman who was simply outstanding: 8.2 IP, 4 H, 2 K’s, 0 BB’s. The Atlanta Braves offense been a major letdown for the last several weeks. Though Freddie Freeman‘s return to the every day lineup bodes well for future offensive success, Atlanta has to find a way to score runs or things are about to go seriously south for the young club. Atlanta is a season-worst 9 games below .500 after this road sweep at Camden Yards.

Despite a tough series loss to the Baltimore Orioles, there are still a few positive takeaways from this three-game set. Nick Markakis had a nice homecoming to his former stopping grounds with 5 hits in the series. With Freddie Freeman back from the Disabled List, I do like Markakis to bat leadoff for the Atlanta Braves going forward, given Jace Peterson and Cameron Maybin‘s recent struggles at the plate.
Outside of Jim Johnson‘s blown save Monday night, I thought that the bullpen pitched decently in the three game series. David Aardsma continues to succeed for Fredi Gonzalez when called upon in relief, pitching two strong innings tonight. Andrew McKirahan seems revitalized after serving his PED suspension and looked okay last night. Besides Luis Avilan I’ve really liked our bullpen of late and hope it’s something positive to continue through the rest of the season.

What gets lost in tonight’s defeat is that Mike Foltynewicz appears like he belongs in the Atlanta Braves rotation: 6IP, 2ER, 6 H, 8 K, 2 BB. The home runs surrendered to Jonathan Schoop and J.J. Hardy could have happened to anybody since Camden Yards heavily favors the hitters. While he does need to find a way to pitch more efficiently to last longer in games, I see a lot of positives coming from Mike Foltynewicz staying in our rotation for the rest of 2015.
Even better news, the Atlanta Braves get to play a team that’s performed worse than them this season this weekend when the Braves take on the lowly Philadelphia Phillies sans Jonathan Papelbon and possibly ace Cole Hamels via trade deadline deals. So go Braves!
