Mike Foltynewicz to Replace Injured Banuelos
By John Buhler
Rookie RHP Mike Foltynewicz replaces fellow rookie LHP Manny Banuelos in the Atlanta Braves’ rotation after Banuelos went to the 15-Day Disabled List due to elbow inflammation. With Manny Banuelos coming off Tommy John surgery, let’s hope that nothing serious ails our young LHP prospect.

We’ve seen Mike Foltynewicz start several times for the Atlanta Braves this season, making 9 starts in 12 appearances with the Big League club since coming over to Atlanta via Houston in the Evan Gattis trade this offseason. Though he owns a winning record as a Braves’ starter (3-2), his 5.27 ERA and 1.610 WHIP are troubling.

After a rough outing against the New York Mets on June 14th (4.1 IP, 5ER, 9 H, 2 HR), Mike Foltynewicz went back to AAA for further reevaluation. For a guy that has a blazing fastball, you would think that a rampant number of walks would stand as the primary issue for the young fireballer. But Mike has not walked more than two batters for the Atlanta Braves since May 12th’s start against the Cincinnati Reds. The issue with Folty has been pitching efficiently and command other pitches than his overpowering fastball.
Mike Foltynewicz did make a brief stint in the Atlanta Braves’ bullpen prior to the All-Star Break, making three combined relief appearances against the Milwaukee Brewers and the Colorado Rockies. The 2.2 IP over three games wasn’t a sufficient sample size to see if Folty’s destiny is to become a bullpen piece for the Atlanta Braves of the future.
Since going back to AAA Gwinnett after the break Mike Foltynewicz has made two starts for the G-Braves, allowing 3ER in both of his starts against Syracuse and Rochester. Though he has 1-6 while with the Gwinnett Braves, his AAA ERA of 3.49 is still respectable enough to confirm his return to the Atlanta Braves rotation after the Manny Banuelos DL stint.
Though Mike did give up an unearned run in the game-winning bloop single to the Colorado Rockies Carlos Gonzalez before the All-Star break out of the Atlanta Braves’ bullpen, he looked like a more confident pitcher in his second stint with the Big League ball club. Obviously you could tell that he wanted to pitch in the starting rotation but was grateful for his opportunities coming out of the ‘pen.

Well, Mike Foltynewicz gets another shot at cracking the Atlanta rotation in his start against arguably Baltimore’s best pitcher RHP Chris Tillman in the series finale against the Orioles. I think Folty has a strong performance tonight, going 6 innings in a quality start for the Atlanta Braves.
He won’t have to worry about putting on a batting helmet in this interleague matchup. That should give him a boost to go possibly six innings for the Braves this evening. When Mike Foltynewicz develops the command of a secondary pitch of his, whether it’s a breaking ball or a change-up, I think he does find a way to stay in the Atlanta rotation as opposed to being tagged as our closer of the future. Go get ’em, Folty!
