Atlanta Braves Pummeled 9-3 by Phillies
By John Buhler
Tonight was not Williams Perez‘s night. He struggled mightily in his return to the Atlanta rotation as the Atlanta Braves received a pummeling at the hands of the Philadelphia Phillies, 9-3.

The Atlanta Braves have lost five straight games since taking a rare road win against the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday afternoon. Atlanta has since been swept by the Baltimore Orioles in Camden Yards and now has lost the first two contests in a four-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Atlanta now 46-57 are only half a dozen games or so ahead of the lowly Phillies in the National League East Division Standings (40-64). Bad mojo is plaguing the Atlanta locker room since two significant trades have gone down in the last week. The Kelly Johnson/Juan Uribe deal with the New York Mets was bad because it decimated Fredi Gonzalez‘s bench for the first part of the Cardinals series.
Whatever enchantment President of Baseball Operations John Hart was under in making that ludicrous deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers yesterday completely destroyed morale in the Atlanta Braves clubhouse. Tonight was a dreadful game to watch.
Williams Perez’s first loss as a big leaguer was a stinker. He gave up 9 earned runs on 9 hits in 4.1 innings, while walking 4 batters and striking out only 3 Phillies’ hitters. A four-run first inning and a five-run fifth inning was hard to endure as a spectator. Ryan Howard had 4 RBI’s tonight and Dominic Brown’s fifth inning homer was a mammoth shot to center. When it rains it pours, I know.

Offensively the Atlanta Braves were only out hit by the Philadelphia Phillies 11 to 10. A.J. Pierzynski had a great day at the plate with three base hits. Adonis Garcia seems hit well in the middle of the Atlanta Braves order with another two hits tonight. And Freddie Freeman hit his 100th career homer tonight on an opposite field shot in the top of the eighth inning scoring Cameron Maybin to at least make it a respectable game at 9-3 Philadelphia.
Though he did not get a base hit tonight, I will applaud Cameron Maybin’s effort tonight tracking down the rockets coming off Williams Perez meatballs in center as well as his hustle running down the first base in the top of the eighth. Yes, the game was out of reach by his hustle mattered.

It proved to me that even in the midst of a horrid stretch for this Atlanta Braves team that guys are still playing the game the right way. I’m so glad John Hart didn’t move Cameron Maybin. I hope he’s our center fielder for the next several seasons.

The bullpen continues to pitch well. Though rookie Matt Marksberry surrendered the two hits that allowed Perez’s final two earned runs to score, the Atlanta Braves relief corps combined to allow no earned runs in 3.2 innings. Marksberry went 1.2 tonight and both Jake Brigham and Andrew McKirahan pitched hitless ball in their inning of work.
Atlanta needs to win both tomorrow and Sunday’s game to salvage a split with the Phillies. Hopefully now that the MLB Trade Deadline has come and passed, maybe the Atlanta Braves can pick up the pieces and play some good ball down the stretch with the players they have left. Or this could keep getting uglier and uglier and 2017 couldn’t get here any sooner. I hope it’s the former and not the latter.
