Georgia Bulldogs: Underselling the Offensive Line?

The 2015 Georgia Bulldogs Football Team enters the season as the #9 best team in the country, according to the initial Amway Coaches Poll released yesterday.  Georgia was the SEC Media voters selection to come out of the SEC East and play for an SEC Championship in Atlanta at the Georgia Dome.

The Dawgs have two highly discussed positional groups that are among the best in the nation: the running back unit led by true sophomore Heisman contender Nick Chubb and the linebacker corps featuring three terrifying pass rushers coming off the outside, Leonard Floyd, Jordan Jenkins and Lorenzo Carter.

  • But I believe that UGA has at least one more group that the rest of the country needs to worry about.  I’m talking about the Georgia Bulldogs’ veteran offensive line group, that is returning four of five starters.  Do the Georgia Bulldogs have arguably one of the best offensive lines not just in the SEC, but in college football?

I’d like to think so.  While losing former senior leader Center David Andrews to the NFL’s New England Patriots hurts, Georgia does return its other four starters up front.  Seniors John Theus and Kolton Houston will play on the outside at left tackle and right tackle respectively.  Right Guard Greg Pyke is an outstanding athlete on the interior for the Bulldogs’ protective unit.  And former left guard Brandon Kublanow likely moves to center and assumes Andrews’ job with Isaiah Wynn moving in at LG.

Moving Kublanow to center won’t stand as a difficult transition for Offensive Line Coach Rob Sale’s group as Brandon Kublanow played center in high school at Walton (Marietta, GA) and was the number two overall center prospect in the 2013 High School Graduating Class.

John Theus, the new vocal leader of the group, expressed his excitement of getting to play next to Wynn on the left side.  They have some chemistry together as Wynn has cross-trained to play all three interior line positions.  Theus likes Wynn’s athleticism and likens Kublanow’s build to that of David Andrews, the good kind of stocky necessary to play center at a high level.

While I couldn’t surely say that the Georgia Bulldogs have the best offensive line entering the 2015 season like I can with the LBs and RBs, I do think that they are a Top 5 unit in the Power 5.  There are three things that the Georgia Bulldogs’ offensive line has to do to have a world-class 2015.

First, a new vocal leader has to emerge.  Check that off as John Theus is commanding the leadership role entering fall camp.  Second, Kublanow has to play with poise at center.  That seems likely as Rich relies heavily on his center’s performances.  Look for Brandon Kublanow to follow David Andrews’ lead who followed Ben Jones‘ lead before him.  Lastly, Isaiah Wynn has to make a smooth transition from rotational reserve to full-time starter.  Being that he nearly won the job over Kublanow last year, I see Wynn having a strong 2015 as a first-year starter for the Georgia Bulldogs.

We’re getting there.  I’ve started counting down days to kickoff.  Only 36 more days until the 2015 version of the Georgia Bulldogs tee it up Between The Hedges when the ULM Warhawks come to the Classic City for some great gridiron action.  Now that I realize that our offensive line will also lead us this season, I’m confident Georgia will have a strong season.  Perhaps a very special season for all of Dawg Nation to enjoy.  Expect the best, prepare for the worst: the Georgia Way.  Go Dawgs!
