Atlanta Braves to Host Reigning Champ Giants

The Atlanta Braves are finally home after a dreadful road trip, going 2-8 against St. Louis, Baltimore, and Philadelphia in their last 10 games.  Now Atlanta has to face the reigning World Series Champion San Francisco Giants in their lone trip to Turner Field this season.

I’d like to apologize for not having a recap for Games 3 and 4 of the Atlanta Braves series with the Philadelphia Phillies.  With the way the Braves have played since their two major trades leading up to the deadline, I couldn’t bear the thought of watching Fredi Gonzalez‘s team get swept in Philadelphia.  The series with the Colorado Rockies in Denver prior to the All-Star Break still hurts.

Needless to say, I think Braves Country needed a weekend off after the pummeling the Atlanta Braves took in the last ten days.  I’ve come to grips that this team will likely lose over 81 games this year and making the playoffs are just a pipe dream at this point.  But I’m still excited to see all the new, young talent getting better in the remaining two months of the 2015 MLB Season for the Atlanta Braves.

  • Atlanta hosts the San Francisco Giants at Turner Field for a three-game set this week.  The Giants are very much in contention in the NL Playoff Race, looking like a Wild Card team but possibly a division winner if Bruce Bochy‘s boys can catch their arch rival Los Angeles Dodgers.

Mike Foltynewicz (3-3, 5.04 ERA, 60 K’s) takes on Matt Cain (2-2, 4.50 ERA, 23 K’s) in tonight’s series opener.  Before injuries derailed him the last two seasons, Cain was the ace of the Giants rotation, not Madison Bumgarner.  The guy threw a perfect game and has been an important piece in their three World Series titles in five seasons.

Foltynewicz had a strong last start against the Baltimore Orioles where he competed admirably against Baltimore’s ace Chris Tillman.  Folty gave up two solo shots which proved as the only runs in Wednesday night’s contest.  But since it happened in hitter-friendly Camden Yards, I can live with that.

In his four appearances since the debacle in Citi Field back in June, Folty has looked like a different pitcher.  He looks confident on the mound and is in command of that powerful fastball.  When he learns to pitch as opposed to throw by working more efficiently and developing his secondary offerings, he could become the Atlanta Braves number three starter in their rotation.

Tomorrow night Shelby Miller (5-8, 2.44 ERA, 111 K’s) seeks for that sacred 6th win against former NL Cy Young winner Jake Peavy (2-4, 4.12 ERA, 25 K’s).  I’m expecting no run support, but a quality start from Miller.  Can the Atlanta Braves win a 1-0 complete game shutout Tuesday night?  Is that what it’s going to take for Shelby Miller to taste victory once again?  I’d buy him a win at this point if I could.

In the series finale, Williams Perez (4-1, 4.14 ERA, 41 K’s) takes on Madison Bumgarner (11-6, 3.39 ERA, 139 K’s).  Given how poorly Perez pitched in his last start against Philadelphia, I hope the Atlanta Braves don’t lose by two touchdowns at home Wednesday with MadBum on the hill.  However, Bumgarner is coming off his worst start of the year too after giving up six runs against the Texas Rangers in Arlington.  So maybe there’s a chance for the Braves to upset the Giants in the series finale?

Atlanta is 26-20 at home so I can get behind that.  Though the San Francisco Giants are 7-3 in their last ten games, maybe the Braves find a way to win this series at home.  I’m trying to enter the home series against the Giants optimistically.  I hope the Atlanta Braves left all that bad mojo on the road and get back to playing decent baseball when they’re at home.
