Matt Wisler has gradually become my favorite rookie on the Atlanta Braves. I had heard about how solid of a prospect he was in the San Diego Padres organization for some time. Though the Padres certainly have their issues scoring runs in cavernous Petco Park, that organization is incredible at scouting, drafting, and developing Major League pitchers.
Though John Hart to give up Craig Kimbrel to get Wisler in the Easter Sunday blockbuster deal with San Diego, this trade gets better every day for the Atlanta Braves. Cameron Maybin has become the team’s every day centerfielder when the Padres included him essentially as a throw-in. John Hart doesn’t have to pay the Melvin Upton, Jr. contract any more. And most importantly, Matt Wisler looks like a front-line starter for the Braves for hopefully the next decade.

Most 22-year olds are still in AA working on their secondary offerings. Matt Wisler has great command of four pitches already. Look for his to continue to perfect them the rest of the season. If he continues to pitch okay and get good run support, I could see Matt as a potential 10-game winner for the Atlanta Braves this season.
Though his ERA of 4.44 is a little high for my liking, I love Wisler’s mound presence. While 2015 is still very much a work in progress for the young right-hander, I see him as the number two starter in the 2016 Atlanta Braves rotation. The upside with this kid is amazing and I can’t wait to see what he becomes in the next several seasons for the Braves.
