Keep in mind that there is nothing wrong with being a number three starter in a solid rotation.  John Smoltz was one of the best postseason pitchers ever and is in the Baseball Hall of Fame as arguably the third starter in the 1990’s Atlanta Braves rotations behind both Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine.  Their pitching Leo Mazzone said that Julio Teheran is best suited as a number three starter on a contending team’s rotation.

When Atlanta is back to playing contending baseball, I want Julio to out-class pitchers in the middle of the pack of their respective rotations.  I see 2015 as a year of growing pains for the young right-hander, still just 24 years old.  Can Julio get back to pitching at an All-Star level as soon as next?  Of course he can and most of Braves Country expects him to as the former ace of the staff.

More from Atlanta Braves

Would I like to see Julio reclaim his spot atop the Atlanta rotation in 2016?  Sure, but just because you’re not the Opening Day starter doesn’t mean you can’t have the best season of any member on the staff.  I would argue that LA’s Zack Greinke is having an ace caliber season as the number two starter behind Clayton Kershaw.

That’s how the Atlanta Braves were so successful during the 14 consecutive division title run because their 3rd and 4th starters would have led most staffs in baseball had they pitched elsewhere.  I love Julio Teheran’s game when he is on, but he’s too inconsistent at the moment for me to anoint him the ace of the 2016 staff going forward.
