Atlanta Braves Top Marlins 9-8 in the Rain
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves win a wet and wild one against divisional rival Miami Marlins 9-8 Thursday night.
It was a long game scattered throughout scattered showers Thursday night between the Atlanta Braves and the Miami Marlins. Back and forth it went between the Braves and the Fish. Just when a lead felt safe for one team, the other would put up some crooked numbers in their next at bat to keep things interesting.

Weather was certainly a factor tonight as outfielders were sliding all over the place trying to make plays. The rain affected both pitching staffs as clean innings were hard to come by. Atlanta Braves starter Matt Wisler gave up 9 hits on 5 earned runs in 5.1 innings. Walks were an issue for the young right hander as Matt allowed 3 free passes tonight. But with the way the game was going, it was enough to keep the Atlanta Braves in control for most of the night.

Andrew McKirahan struggled out of the bullpen, blowing Wisler’s 8-5 lead in the top of the 8th with 3 earned runs on 3 hits. Perhaps the rain was coming down too hard in the top half of that frame as location was an issue for McKirahan in his inning of work, throwing 29 pitches in relief.
Fortunately Atlanta was able to put runs across tonight and gave rookie RHP Arodys Vizcaino his first big league save situation. Though it wasn’t easy, Vizcaino battled to record his first save as a Major Leaguer. Just about every pitched fired out of his cannon of an arm registered over 98 MPH on the radar gun.
Atlanta had 12 hits tonight with every starting position player had at least one hit. Daniel Castro led the way with 3 hits and both Jace Peterson and Eury Perez had a pair of base knocks. Nick Markakis continues to hit like a maniac with a double and 3 RBI’s this evening.
Adonis Garcia crushed a two-run blast off LHP Adam Conley in the bottom of the 5th inning. He now has 4 homers on the year in very limited action. Perhaps he’s the power bat we’ve needed all along.

The Atlanta Braves may not get back to .500 this season but I like how hard the play every night. Guys like Cameron Maybin and A.J. Pierzynski play with pride as if the 2015 Braves are World Series contenders.
When President of Baseball Operations John Hart‘s plan comes to fruition in 2017 when the Atlanta Braves make the move up I-75 to SunTrust Park, we could contend right away. But you have to enjoy the little things like beating a rival at home in the rain by one run.
