Adonis Garcia: From Journeyman to Unsung Hero for Braves
Adonis Garcia hit his fourth home-run as a part of the Atlanta Braves in Thursday’s contest against the Miami Marlins.
Following the trade of Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson to the New York Mets before the Trade Deadline, the Atlanta Braves called up the 30-year-old Adonis Garcia from AAA Gwinnett to provide infield depth. After an oblique injured forced first-baseman Freddie Freeman back to the Disabled List, Chris Johnson moved from third to first, allowing Garcia consistent playing time.

Adonis Garcia played was finally given an opportunity with the Atlanta Braves this July to play with a major league club. Since 2003, Garcia has played exclusively overseas and in the minors, never having the chance to make a big-league roster. Most minor leaguers never make it to the show, and at 30-years-old, it is special as a fan of baseball to watch Garcia play at this level.

Since Adonis Garcia has become a part of the Atlanta Braves’ starting lineup, he has proven to be a source of much-needed offense. On a Braves squad that has struggled with both Freddie Freeman on and off the field since the end of June, Garcia has provided power and clutch hitting when the club has most needed it.
On July 26, with the Atlanta Braves facing a sweep at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals, Adonis Garcia hit his first career home-run at a crucial juncture of the game, securing a hard-fought victory for Matt Wisler and the Braves. Garcia built off the momentum of his game winning homer in a game against the Baltimore Orioles, breaking a scoreless tie late in the game.

Perhaps the biggest moment of Garcia’s young career came during Monday night’s twelve inning affair against the San Francisco Giants. With the Giants leading 8-7 in extra-innings, Adonis Garcia launched a 2-run homer to lift the Braves to an emotional win.
Again on Thursday night, amidst a rainy contest against the division rival Miami Marlins in a close game, Adonis Garcia hit a 2-run home-run to give the Atlanta Braves an 8-5 lead. Though it was not the decisive blow that his homer on Monday night was, Garcia has demonstrated throughout the past two weeks that he is perhaps the Braves’ most clutch player. Given his recent performances, I want Adonis Garcia at the plate with the game on the line.
While Adonis Garcia’s playing time figures to be reduced once Hector Olivera is ready to make his début for the Braves, Garcia can still be a valuable asset for the ball-club coming off the bench. A team can never have too many clutch players, and whether Garcia remains with the club after this season or not, his story is inspiring and fun to watch.
