Atlanta Braves Challenge Marlins, Win 6-3

The Atlanta Braves best the Miami Marlins 6-3 Friday night thanks to what was a very interesting bottom of the seventh inning, when Atlanta plated four runs on a pair of Adeiny Hechavarria errors and two overturned calls in the Atlanta Braves’ favor.

Atlanta has taken the first two of their series with the Fish with tonight’s victory.  At the start of the contest, I believed that it would come down to two dueling aces as both Atlanta’s Julio Teheran and Miami’s Jose Fernandez were on top of their game for most of the night.

Julio pitched 6.2 innings of 3-run ball for the Atlanta Braves tonight, with all three runs crossing in the seventh inning.  For as Jekyll and Hyde he has been this season, I’m confident that Teheran will pitch well in his starts at Turner Field.

  • At the plate tonight, the Atlanta Braves scored their six runs on eight hits.  Nick Markakis is blistering hot in the batter’s box, going 3 for 4 tonight with 2 RBI’s and a run scored.  He is hitting just under .300 at .299 on the season during his 14-game hitting streak.

A.J. Pierzynski continued his 12-game streak as well tonight with an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, scoring SS Daniel Castro.  Pierzynski knocked in Castro again in the crazy bottom of the seventh, by grounding out to Hechavarria.

Arodys Vizcaino had his second save opportunity in as many days and shut the door on the Marlins with a one-hit ninth inning to record the save.  Though wild at times, I love how the ball explodes out of his arm.  If this goes well for him the rest of the season, Vizcaino might just end up being the Atlanta Braves’ closer for the foreseeable future.

Atlanta kept its focus in the bottom of the seventh after losing the lead in the top half of the frame to the Fish 3-2.  LF Todd Cunningham scored on an overturned play at home where Marlins Catcher Jeff Mathis didn’t step on the plate for the force out at home.  He opted to tag Cunningham, perhaps forgetting that the bases were loaded and Todd slid in safely to tie the game up at 3 apiece.

Markakis delivered the knockout blow to the Marlins with his two-RBI single that scored Pedro Ciriaco and Jace Peterson to make it 5-3 Braves.  Daniel Castro was initially called out at third, but actually slid in safely past Martin Prado‘s attempted tag.  The second overturned call of the inning confirmed that Castro was safe.  He then scored on AJ’s groundout to make it 6-3 Atlanta Braves.

The locker room has to feel pretty good heading into tomorrow’s game after taking the first two from the Fish.  Atlanta’s spirits will only rise when Nick Swisher and Michael Bourn get to the clubhouse tomorrow after coming over to the Atlanta Braves in a post non-waiver trade deadline deal that send 3B Chris Johnson to the Cleveland Indians.  Great team win tonight.  Go Braves!
