Atlanta Braves Shutout 2-0 By Rays
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves had their best opportunity to score tonight off Tampa Bay’s Erasmo Ramirez in the top of the first inning. Nick Markakis doubled to rightfield and though Cameron Maybin is fast, he wasn’t fast enough to score from first as Rays C Curt Casali tagged Maybin out at the plate.
Though Williams Perez has a terrific start for the Atlanta Braves, he got absolutely no run support in his eight innings of work as the Atlanta Braves fall to the Tampa Bay Rays 2-0 Tuesday night. The only mistake Perez made tonight was a poorly placed change-up to CF Kevin Kiermaier in the bottom of the seventh, homering in SS Asdrubal Cabrera.

Perez was the only pitcher tonight for the Atlanta Braves in this incredibly fast game, ending just after the 9 o’clock hour on the East Coast. Williams allowed only four hits but did walk four Rays tonight in his 11th start of the season, pitching mostly to contact as he only recorded one strikeout in the contest.

Williams Perez lowered his ERA to 4.21 tonight with his gem of a performance. Even though he has lost his last two starts for the Atlanta Braves, I’ve been impressed with his ability to pitch deeper into games compared to the rest of the Atlanta starting staff. While I like the 14+ innings in his last two starts, the 8 earned runs during that frame need improvement.
Perez did everything in his power to keep the Atlanta Braves in the game, but his club only managed six hits Tuesday night. Nick Markakis and Adonis Garcia each had two hits, with Markakis first inning double being the only extra base hit the Atlanta Braves had tonight.
While many fans would call this a boring game to watch, I loved the pace of the game and thoroughly enjoy watching an old-fashioned pitchers’ duel. Given that tonight’s game occurred in an American League park, I’m not surprised of the lack of small ball being showcased at Tropicana Field tonight.
Even with its designated hitter, Nick Markakis, carrying the offense, Atlanta still struggles to put runs on the board when the Braves are away from home. The Atlanta Braves have lost 12 of their last 14 road games. Though I never expected this young team to know what it takes win on the road, the Atlanta Braves are probably the worst road team in baseball since the All-Star Break.

Fortunately for the Atlanta Braves, there is only one more road game in this series before the Braves come back home to Turner Field to take on the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday night. Tomorrow’s series finale with the Tampa Bay Rays includes two young stud pitchers in Matt Wisler (5-2, 4.85 ERA, 32 K’s) for the Braves and Jake Odorizzi (6-6, 2.77 ERA, 93 K’s) for Tampa. Here’s to coming out of the Trop with a win tomorrow before the Snakes come to town Friday. Go Braves!
