Mark Richt Emphasizes Team First During Camp
By John Buhler
Mark Richt had a post-practice press conference with the media after yesterday’s session. Richt thinks that the team is working hard leading up to their scrimmage tomorrow and Picture Day on Saturday.
It seemed to me that during yesterday’s media obligations that Mark Richt didn’t want to get into specifics with any player, opting to focus more on how the team is doing. Richt said that putting the team first is a major emphasis at fall camp in Athens for the 2015 Georgia Bulldogs.

I understand the clandestine nature of Richt leading up to Friday’s scrimmage. He obviously doesn’t want to tip his hand as to who is leading in most positional races and wants to keep the competition as high for as long a possible.

Many media members asked about what Mark Richt thinks of true freshman defensive tackle Trent Thompson, as Thompson was according to some rankings the top prospect in the High School Class of 2015. Mark Richt opted to present the entire UGA Freshmen Class in a positive light, though he did say that Trent could play both tackle and end for the Dawgs this season.
When asked about the starting quarterback situation, Richt stated that he and his staff are trying to make the competition as fair as possible for all three scholarship quarterbacks: Brice Ramsey, Faton Bauta, and Greyson Lambert. All three are getting work with the first and second teams, even the third team at times. Richt also mentioned that the mobile quarterback Faton Bauta will likely not be cleared for contact in practice this season as in years past due to depth concerns.
Mark Richt believes that every player is on the same page, putting the team first, and hopefully that continues throughout fall camp and into the season. Everybody seems to take coaching/criticism well and stubbornness doesn’t seem like it’s infecting the team like it had in the past.

I believe a ton of has to do with Jeremy Pruitt running the defense. Coach Pruitt seems to me like a no-nonsense type of coach and the Dawgs have needed that on the defensive side of the football for over the last decade.

Richt will likely divulge more information after tomorrow’s scrimmage, as he will probably read off the game’s unofficial statistics in another press conference. The quarterback competition may become less cloudy after Coach Mark Richt reads off Bauta’s, Lambert’s and Ramsey’s passing stats. Though Bauta and Ramsey are neck and neck in the eyes of most people following this competition, how Lambert performs in his first scrimmage with the Georgia Bulldogs presents an interesting wrinkle in this ongoing competition.
The Dawgs have today off before tomorrow’s scrimmage. Only 23 more days until it’s time to tee it up Between the Hedges. Until next time, forever, Go Dawgs!
