Atlanta Falcons: 5 Players to Benefit Most from Preseason
By John Buhler
Ricardo Allen will change positions in the Dan Quinn era, moving from cornerback to free safety. While Allen has only played corner before, Quinn and his staff believes that playing free actually better accents his playmaking abilities as a member of the Atlanta Falcons secondary.

Though it shocked most of us when Quinn announced the switch in OTA’s, it seems that the staff has fallen in love with Ricardo Allen at free safety, as he is atop the depth chart ahead of Kemal Ishmael, Charles Godfrey, and Sean Baker.

Allen’s talent was obvious as we saw him do great things during last season of HBO’s Hard Knocks, but the Falcons’ CB depth chart was not in Ricardo’s favor. Rather than getting little to no playing time as the fourth or fifth corner, he has a terrific opportunity here in training camp to win the starting free safety job outright as only a second-year player.
Though Quinn views Ricardo Allen as a perfect scheme fit in his secondary as a free safety, Allen will still have to earn his starting gig by having consistently strong performances against other teams in live action. As weird as it sounds now, the starting free safety spot is possibly Ricardo Allen’s to lose. Let’s hope that Allen sticks at FS for the Dirty Birds.
