Georgia Bulldogs Scrimmage Yesterday, No Stats Recorded

facebooktwitterreddit

The Georgia Bulldogs held their first scrimmage of fall camp at Sanford Stadium yesterday afternoon.  Players like Sophomore RB Sony Michel and Senior ILB Jake Ganus expressed their excitement for getting to play an intra-squad match Between the Hedges.

Though must of us expected for Mark Richt to read off the unofficial stats from yesterday’s scrimmage, Coach Richt opted not to divulge that information.  While I would have liked to have heard the stat lines for the three scholarship quarterbacks competing for the starting job, I totally understand Richt’s clandestine approach to this intense QB battle in the Classic City.

In the past Coach Richt had no problem telling the media how his quarterbacks were faring in off-season scrimmages.  But he hasn’t had a quarterback battle like this since 2006.  Every year since Matthew Stafford won the job away from Joe Tereshinski III after the loss to Vanderbilt in 2006, Richt has had confidence in knowing who his starting QB was, even with RS freshman Aaron Murray in 2010.

  • I’m not surprised that Richt is leaving fans and media members alike in the dark about who is leading in the starting quarterback race.  It wouldn’t shock me if the team doesn’t release any unofficial stats from now until the start of the season to further intensify this QB race.

Richt did mention the other day after practice that he does see it becoming a two-man race here shortly but again he would not specifically state which two quarterbacks he was referring to.  All three scholarship quarterbacks, Junior Faton Bauta, RS Sophomore Brice Ramsey, and UVA transfer Junior Greyson Lambert could all likely start at many schools in the Power 5.

Coach Richt’s emphasis on ‘team-first’ will bring out the best in the 2015 Georgia Bulldogs.  While the star players will certainly rise to the top of the depth chart, it is more important for the entire team to get better as depth is what wins championships in College Football.  Continuity and next-man-up mentality allows teams like Alabama, Ohio State, and Oregon to stay relevant in the College Football Playoff era.

While we all want to know who is going to win the starting quarterback job for the Georgia Bulldogs, it doesn’t serve Mark Richt to reveal that information before he is sure that he has found his guy.  Though he did say that he could see two guys getting equal snaps in Week 1’s matchup against the ULM Warhawks, Mark Richt has rarely favored a dual-quarterback approach.

I see this covert nature surrounding the new UGA starting QB job as a great thing for the program.  It gives Brice Ramsey the opportunity to prove himself against major competition in-house.  Faton Bauta and Greyson Lambert are getting fair shots at the job as well.  This race will continue to heat up as we get closer to the Georgia Bulldogs teeing it up Between the Hedges on September 5th.  Until next time, Go Dawgs!
