Peter Moylan Called Up, Returns to Braves’ Roster
Former Atlanta Braves RHP and fan-favorite Peter Moylan is back in a Braves uniform on Sunday, as the team announced that they had purchased his contract from AAA Gwinnett.
Following Tommy John surgery that has sidelined him since 2013, Peter Moylan is back in the big-leagues. In 27 appearances with AAA Gwinnett in 2015, Peter Moylan notched a 3.31 ERA. In a corresponding move, the Atlanta Braves optioned Jake Brigham back to Gwinnett to make room for Moylan on the roster.

Peter Moylan played with the Atlanta Braves for 6 years, from 2006-2012. In 2009, Moylan had his best season during his first stint with the Atlanta Braves, possessing an ERA of 2.84 in 73 innings pitched. Now the 36-year-old veteran reliever from Australia is seeking to revive his career in the place where he found most of his professional success. The Braves signed Peter Moylan to a 2-year minor league deal back in March of this year.

During his time at AAA Gwinnett, Peter Moylan consistently was pitching around 88-90 mph. Having that acceleration on his pitches is encouraging that it will translate into success with the Braves at the big-league level.
Peter Moylan’s unorthodox arm delivery has allowed him achieve relative success during his big-league career, but Moylan has also struggled with injuries throughout his tenure in the majors. Moylan has undergone two Tommy John surgeries in a 6-year span, and underwent back surgery in 2011. The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Peter Moylan in the 2013 season, but he struggled with his command, accruing a 6.46 ERA in 15 innings pitched.

Since that time, Peter Moylan has undergone another Tommy John surgery and has been out of work. His promotion by the Atlanta Braves on Sunday marks the second veteran addition to their struggling bullpen this weekend. Edwin Jackson was signed on Thursday to provide depth in the relief corps for the Bravos. Jackson made his Atlanta debut last night, pitching 2.1 innings of shutout ball.
Peter Moylan should provide at the very least a morale boost to fans and the ball-club, as a long-time fan favorite returns to Atlanta. After the recent struggles of Jake Brigham, Moylan’s veteran presence should continue to help solidify the bullpen.
It is wonderful to see Peter Moylan back in a Braves’ uniform. His comeback story is one that I can root for, and I hope that he makes a profound impact on the Atlanta Braves’ pitching staff, providing veteran leadership and stability in the bullpen. Welcome back, Peter!
