Atlanta Braves Look to Stay Classy in San Diego
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves head to the west coast for a three-game set with the San Diego Padres at Petco Park. Atlanta (53-64) is 5-5 in its last 10 games and hopes to build on a series victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks back at Turner Field.
Road woes have been a season long issue for the Atlanta Braves, nearly 20 games under .500 away from the Ted (21-40). San Diego (56-62) finds themselves in 4th place in the NL West behind LA, San Francisco, and Arizona heading into this week’s series with the Braves.

Tonight’s starters are Williams Perez (4-3, 4.21 ERA) for the Braves and Colin Rea (1-0, 5.40 ERA) for the Padres. Perez hopes to build on an impressive last start where he pitched a complete game in a 2-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field.

I’ve liked his competitiveness in his two most recent starts since coming off the Disabled List though he hasn’t won a game for the Braves since his return from the DL. Hopefully Williams Perez gets some run support tonight. However that might a tall order for a meager offense like the Atlanta Braves have to generate runs in very pitcher-friendly Petco Park.
Tomorrow has Matt Wisler (5-2, 4.74 ERA) and James Shields (8-5, 3.89 ERA) on the tilt. Though Wisler has had control issues in his last few starts, I think that he will rise to the occasion and give it his all when going against a pitcher the caliber of James Shields. With runs likely at a premium in this series, Wisler will need to buckle down for the Atlanta Braves to contend in this one.
On Wednesday’s series finale, Julio Teheran (8-6, 4.44 ERA) toes the rubber against Tyson Ross (8-9, 3.40 ERA) in this mid-week matinée. Teheran went six strong innings in his last start at home against the Diamondbacks. But this is a road game where Julio struggles mightily (2-5, 6.75 ERA in 12 starts in 2015). Even though Teheran won his last road start back on August 2nd in Philadelphia, there is always the chance that things could get really out of hand and escalate quickly if Julio’s road woes continue.

Let’s not forget that in this series, the Atlanta Braves will likely see some familiar faces. Craig Kimbrel, Justin Upton, and Melvin Upton Jr. all play for San Diego. It seems that switching teams hasn’t helped these former Braves enjoy winning on the west coast. Taking two of three from San Diego will help the Braves claw back to .500 ever so slowly.
