Atlanta Braves Fall to Padres 5-3 Despite Maybin’s Whammy
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves were not able to overcome a 3-run second inning put together by the San Diego Padres off SP Williams Perez. Atlanta has now lost 8 straight games at Petco Park as the Braves fall 5-3 late Monday night.
It looked unseasonably humid in the great City of San Diego, California Monday evening. The heaviness of the atmosphere seemed to have an effect on Williams Perez tonight who was sweating like he was pitching back home in Atlanta. Before we could blink an eye, the San Diego Padres put three across in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-0 lead over the Atlanta Braves.

The first run came on an infield single off the bat of Catcher Derek Norris scoring Justin Upton (I did not see that coming!). In the very next at-bat, Atlanta Braves killer Will Venable singled to right to bring in both Yonder Alonso and Norris.

Perez eventually settled down and pitched an okay 6.1 innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 7 hits despite walking 4 Padres tonight. Matt Marksberry came in and struck out the two batters he faced in relief of Perez in the seventh. Peter Moylan didn’t have a great eighth inning tonight, allowing Yonder Alonso to go whammy off him.
But you know who else went whammy tonight? Cameron Maybin, that’s who. His return to San Diego was as joyous as Baxter the Terrier’s was many years ago. Maybin’s solo shot in the top of the fourth inning was a thing of beauty. Cameron now has a new career high in homers with 10 so far on the year here in 2015. He’s playing inspired baseball in the town he first made a name for himself as a big leaguer.

Though the Atlanta Braves were down 5-2 in the top of the ninth inning and had to face Craig Kimbrel, man, that still sounds weird, Atlanta still fought valiantly all the way until the end. The Braves were able to plate an additional run in the top of the ninth thanks to Jace Peterson‘s 50th RBI of the season, a single up the middle that easily scored Nick Markakis.

Atlanta will have a tough opponent tomorrow as the young Matt Wisler will try his luck against a seasoned veteran in Big Game James Shields. While I hope that Wisler can hold his own against one of the better pitchers on the San Diego staff, I’m still wondering how the Atlanta Braves are going to score runs tomorrow against James Shields. Freddie Freeman doesn’t come off the DL until Wednesday. You stay classy, Atlanta!
