Georgia Bulldogs: Offense Coming Together
By John Buhler
Georgia Bulldogs’ Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach Brian Schottenheimer and Offensive Line Coach Rob Sale met with the media after yesterday’s practice. Both UGA assistants shed some light on how their position groups are coming together in Fall Camp.
Schottenheimer did not favor any of the three potential starting quarterbacks in the UGA system, saying that all three, Faton Bauta, Greyson Lambert and Brice Ramsey, were receiving equal reps with the ones, twos, and threes. Coach Schottenheimer said about naming a starting quarterback, “…Before the first game or whenever it is, I think when we’re ready, we’ll make that decision.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise given the clandestine nature of this intense QB Battle for the Georgia Bulldogs. However, to me it seems like Coach Schottenheimer is a bit more convincing in how he says that it’s truly a three-man race for QB at this point. Head Coach Mark Richt has previously stated that it could get closer to just two in a couple of days but wouldn’t name specific players.

When asked about having to give UVA transfer Junior Greyson Lambert a “fair shake” at the starting gig, Schotty gave credit to Greyson for picking up the system so quickly, as “it’s a testament to how hard he’s worked.” Coach Schottenheimer then added, “there are plenty of reps to go around. All reps are equal. Again, these guys have to earn more reps.” Consistency, he said, will ultimately be the deciding factor in who wins the starting job.
Coach Sale is looking at his offensive line, and though we likely know who the starting five will become (LT John Theus, LG Isaiah Wynn, C Brandon Kublanow, RG Greg Pyke, and RT Kolton Houston), Sale has his eyes set on developing an offensive line rotation that runs eight men deep. Sale stated, “I think we have some guys we can count on to be the sixth and seventh, trying to get an eighth offensive lineman.
Rob Sale emphasized that the unit will feature the five best available players, not just replacing “the right tackle with another right tackle if he goes down.” Besides Senior OL Hunter Long, Coach Sale said that Dyshon Sims and Kendall Baker are coming along nicely and could make up the UGA offensive line rotation.

Coach Sale liked the conditioning of his offensive line and does not favor substitution for the Georgia Bulldogs up front to keep guys fresh. His rotations seem like the are more to do with injuries and situational scheme fits than anything else.
When asked about Brandon Kublanow’s ability to snap in shotgun formation, Sale admitted that at first it was shaky but that Kublanow has done a great job with it in the last 8-10 practices. The last thing the Georgia Bulldogs need are bad snaps and muffed exchanges between the quarterback and center.

The love for Isaiah Wynn continues as this guy who was contending for starting center and will now likely start at left guard would move to tackle if injuries affect either John Theus or Kolton Houston. It’s a rarity to have an offensive lineman who could potentially start at all five offensive line positions.
Keep an eye on Isaiah Wynn this fall in his sophomore campaign. I think his versatility will only allow the Georgia Bulldogs’ offensive line to continue having success even after Theus and Houston leave the program after this season. Only 18 more days until the Dawgs tee it up Between the Hedges when the ULM Warhawks come to town September 5th. Go Dawgs!
