Atlanta Braves, Mike Foltynewicz Falter Again, Lose to Cubs 7-1
The Atlanta Braves lost their fourth consecutive game on Thursday night, falling to the Chicago Cubs at the friendly confines of Wrigley Field by a final score of 7-1.
Thursday’s game once again proved to be a futile contest for the Braves offense, who were only able to muster one run against the Cubs’ pitching staff. Jake Arrietta pitched exceptionally well against an inept Atlanta Braves offense, going 6.0 innings, not allowing a single run, while giving up only 4 hits and 1 walk and striking out 7.

Atlanta Braves starter Mike Foltynewicz pitched well for the first two innings. Then in the bottom of the third, the Cubs offense came to life. Chris Coghlan opened the scoring against Foltynewicz by singling home Addison Russell, giving the Cubs a 1-0 lead. Then in the next at-bat, Anthony Rizzo hit a 3-run homer to right-field, scoring Chris Coghlan and Dexter Fowler, making the score 4-0.

The Cubs offense continued their onslaught in the bottom of the fourth, as rookie shortstop Addison Russell hit a solo shot, increasing the Cubs’ lead to 5-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Chris Coghlan recorded another RBI by tripling home Kyle Schwarber, making the score 5-0. Then in the same inning, Miguel Montero doubled to deep center, scoring Coghlan to give the Cubs a decisive 7-0 lead.
All 7 runs were charged to Mike Foltynewicz, who continues to struggle as a starter for the Atlanta Braves. Though many pundits and fans alike are taking a patient approach when evaluating Foltynewicz’s performance as a starter thus far in 2015, it is disheartening to see the young pitcher get shelled in what seems like almost every game he starts.

The Atlanta Braves were able to scrape together a run in the top of the eight inning, as Adonis Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to center-field, scoring Nick Markakis, making the score 7-1. The only silver lining in tonight’s disappointing contest between the Atlanta Braves and the Cubs was that the Braves’ bullpen pitched remarkably well, with Andrew McKirahan, David Aardsma and Ross Detwiler going 4.1 innings without allowing a run.
The Atlanta Braves will attempt to even the series with the Chicago Cubs tomorrow afternoon at Wrigley Field, as Shelby Miller toes the rubber for the Bravos. Hopefully the Atlanta offense will finally emerge from its slumber to give Shelby Miller the run support he deserves. First pitch is set for 4:05 PM.
