Georgia Bulldogs: Trim QB Race to Two After Scrimmage?

facebooktwitterreddit

The Georgia Bulldogs will have their second intra-squad scrimmage tomorrow before the start of the 2015 Regular Season.  After evaluating tomorrow’s tape, will Head Coach Mark Richt and Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer have seen enough to trim the intense 3-player starting quarterback battle to just two?

In the second scrimmage of fall camp, Mark Richt plans to accomplish a few things in live action on Saturday.  The first he said in yesterday’s press conference was that he wants to see how the special teams plays at full speed.  In the first scrimmage, special teams plays were essentially walkthroughs as the players weren’t asked to tackle or attempt blocking kicks.  Knowing where the special teamers stand should help Richt and his staff have a better feel of the team heading into Week 1.

  • Richt also mentioned that he wants to see young Sophomore OL Isaiah Wynn play a few snaps at offensive tackle.  Wynn will start at Left Guard between Junior Center Brandon Kublanow and Senior Left Tackle John Theus when the regular season begins on September 5th.  Both Richt and Offensive Line Coach feel that Wynn’s versatility allows him to move outside if anything should happen to either Theus or Sixth-Year Senior Right Tackle Kolton Houston.

Perhaps most importantly, many speculate that the three-person QB race between Redshirt Sophomore Brice Ramsey, Junior Faton Bauta, and UVA Transfer Junior Greyson Lambert will shrink to just two following Saturday’s second scrimmage.  If that’s the case, then it’s bad news for either Faton Bauta or Greyson Lambert as I’m certain that Brice Ramsey is either first or second on the UGA QB Depth Chart entering 2015.

While many fans of the Georgia Bulldogs want clarity as to whom wins the starting gig, Richt and Schottenheimer don’t plan on disclosing that inside information until they absolutely have to.  Many believe that is the week leading up to the home opener against the ULM Warhawks on September 5th.

I think that the Georgia Bulldogs won’t need to say anything until Week 2 when the Dawgs venture up to Nashville to play the Vanderbilt Commodores on September 12th.  Technically, I don’t think Richt will have to name a starter until Week 3 when the South Carolina Gamecocks come to town on September 17th.  Georgia should beat Vandy in Nashville, but I’ve seen crazier things happen with the Dawgs over the years.

Will the UGA Coaching Staff cave in and give us some answers about the quarterback scenario?  I doubt it.  Richt will likely say, “Yes, we’ve narrowed it down to two guys, but I don’t feel like telling y’all which two.”  Honestly, this is the answer I want.  Richt and Schotty will keep us in the dark for as long as possible to keep the hype at an all-time high.

If I were on the Georgia Bulldogs Offensive Coaching Staff, I would stay hush-hush and not speak a word about the QB competition.  Let Mark Richt make the call when he’s clearly ready to.  Unless it’s painfully obvious, meaning one guy plays very poorly in Saturday’s scrimmage, expect Mark Richt to stay mum with regards to who the next starting quarterback for the Georgia Bulldogs will be.
