Isaiah Wynn: Bringing Versatility to Offensive Line

facebooktwitterreddit

Isaiah Wynn earned his starting spot on the Georgia Bulldogs offensive line with a strong spring and fall camp.  Wynn will take over at Left Guard as former LG Brandon Kublanow moves over to Center to replace David Andrews, now with the New England Patriots.

Wynn enters the 2015 season as a sophomore with tremendous upside in his final three seasons with the Dawgs.  The St. Petersburg, Florida native just might stand as the most versatile offensive lineman on the entire Georgia roster.

At 6’2”, 278 lbs., Isaiah Wynn has the bulk to play inside on the interior at either guard or center, as well as the quickness and length to play on the outside at either tackle spot.  Wynn entered spring practice in a three-person race for who would win the starting center job.

  • Though Brandon Kublanow beat out both Wynn and Senior Hunter Long for the anchor of the offensive line at center, Isaiah found a spot a left guard for the Dawgs between Kublanow and Senior Left Tackle John Theus.  At SEC Media Days, Theus was one of the first people to praise Isaiah Wynn on his versatility saying that he could play all five offensive line positions for the Georgia Bulldogs if need be.

Head Coach Mark Richt even said publicly that Isaiah Wynn would likely be the guy who would move outside to replace either John Theus or 6th Year Senior Right Tackle Kolton Houston should either succumb to injury.

Rarely do you see a guy that can thrive both on the interior and on the outside of an offensive line.  Isaiah Wynn is clearly a special athlete for the Dawgs even as a sophomore, first-year starter.  With Hunter Long as the sixth offensive lineman in the rotation who could play on the interior, it is crucial to see how Wynn performs on the outside in game situations.

    More from UGA Football

Mark Richt plans to play Isaiah Wynn at tackle during the Georgia Bulldogs second scrimmage of fall camp just to make sure he’s ready to play on the outside if called upon.  I thought that returning four of five starters (Kublanow, Houston, Theus, and Right Guard Junior Greg Pyke) was the reason that UGA would have a great season on the offensive line.  While that still holds true, the versatility Isaiah Wynn has as a sophomore bodes very well for the Dawgs’ offensive line this fall.

Though Isaiah is the starting left guard for the Georgia Bulldogs entering the 2015 season, Mark Richt and Offensive Line Coach Rob Sale have the luxury of a young Swiss Army knife on their offensive line in Isaiah Wynn.  Only 15 more days until it’s Saturday in Athens!  If Baba O’Riley isn’t playing in your head on infinite repeat, you’re doing it wrong.  Forever, Go Dawgs!
