AP Poll, August 23rd: UGA 9th, GT 16th
By John Buhler
The first AP Poll of the 2015 College Football Season is officially out! Only 13 more days until it’s finally football season! Let’s find out how the initial poll shakes out, where both Georgia and Georgia Tech sit, and if our Power 5 schools got a square deal or not.
In the first AP Poll the Top 5 are as follows: Ohio State, TCU, Alabama, Baylor, and Michigan State. Georgia finds itself 9th behind Auburn, Oregon, and Southern California but ahead of Florida State to round of the Top 10. Eleven through 15 are as follows: Notre Dame, Clemson, UCLA, LSU, and Arizona State.

Georgia Tech finds itself 16th, ahead of Ole Miss, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Wisconsin in the Top 20. The rest of the Top 25 rounds out as follows: Stanford, Arizona, Boise State, Missouri, and Tennessee. Did the initial AP Poll get it right?

At first glance, this is about what I expected the initial AP Poll to look like, not varying very much from the initial Amway Coaches Poll released several weeks ago. No argument about who #1 and #2 are, as it should go Ohio State, then TCU. I’m not as high on Alabama as most but recent history says they belong in the Top 5 at least. I like Michigan State but I’m uncertain about how Art Briles replaces Bryce Petty at Baylor. At this point I would put Auburn, Oregon and USC ahead of Baylor, possibly Georgia if I’m being honest.
You won’t hear me complain about my Georgia Bulldogs sitting pretty in the Top 10 at #9. Given the uncertainty surrounding the starting quarterback position, I’ll take 9th and let the Dawgs tough schedule play out. As for Georgia Tech, I feel like they’re a Top 15 team with a strong QB like Justin Thomas. I feel it’s very close from 10 to 16 in the AP Poll, so I think one could argue any of those six (FSU, Notre Dame, Clemson, UCLA, LSU, Arizona State, and Georgia Tech) at any of the six slots.

According to the initial AP Poll, the Georgia Bulldogs will play 5 teams ranked in the Top 25 (#3 Alabama, #6 Auburn, #16 Georgia Tech, #24 Missouri, #25 Tennessee) and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will play 4 (#9 Georgia, #10 Florida State, #11 Notre Dame, #12 Clemson) in their brutal schedule.

Whether you like where the Dawgs or Jackets currently sit in the Top 25, both teams control their own destiny with two very tough schedules. Should but teams navigate their first 11 games with one or fewer losses, then Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate could stand as THE game of rivalry weekend. It could be right there with the Iron Bowl (Alabama-Auburn) as one of the more marquee matchups of Thanksgiving Weekend.
