Atlanta Braves: Aardsma DFA’d, Bethancourt, Marimon Recalled
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves make a pair of roster moves prior to the three-game set with the Colorado Rockies starting tonight. RHP David Aardsma has been DFA’d (designated for assignment) and RHP Sugar Ray Marimon will take his place in the Atlanta Braves bullpen. Also, C Christian Bethancourt will rejoin the Braves after a strong last several weeks in AAA Gwinnett, with OF Eury Perez being sent down to the play for the G-Braves.

Perhaps this type of roster shakeup is what the struggling Atlanta Braves need, an injection of life prior to the much-anticipated September call ups. David Aardsma’s struggles in the month of August ballooned his ERA from 1.80 on July 29th to a season-high 4.70 after the Chicago Cubs series. Though I get the transaction totally, it’s a bummer for the Colorado native to not get to pitch against his hometown team this week.

Sugar Ray Marimon rejoins the club after a lengthy stint in AAA Gwinnett. In the last seven days, Sugar Ray has been nearly unhittable for the G-Braves. Opposing hitters are batting .087/.125/.130. Perhaps Marimon’s conversion to a starter bodes well for the Atlanta Braves. He could step in and spot start if need be for Fredi Gonzalez‘s club.
After a rough start to the 2015 Season, highly touted catching prospect rejoins the Atlanta Braves after tearing up in AAA Gwinnett. Since hitting only .198 for the Big League club, Bethancourt has hit .398/.442/.595 in Gwinnett, playing seriously inspired baseball since his demotion. Let’s hope that Christian brings the hot lumber to the Atlanta Braves in the series against the Rockies.
Though most expected Bethancourt to rejoin the club on September 1st when the roster expands to 40 men, this promotion should come as an early birthday present for Christian Bethancourt who turns 24 on September 2nd.

The demotion of Eury Perez makes sense as his playing time has diminished since the Atlanta Braves brought over both Michael Bourn and Nick Swisher in a trade with the Cleveland Indians a few weeks back. Expect Perez to rejoin the club when the roster expands to 40 on September 1st. Atlanta would certainly welcome back his impressive foot speed on the base paths as a pinch runner at least.
