Atlanta Braves Lose to Rockies 5-1 at Turner Field
The Atlanta Braves were unable to capitalize on their momentum coming out of Monday’s victory against the Rockies, and fell to Colorado on Tuesday at Turner Field by a final score of 5-1.
Atlanta Braves rookie Mike Foltynewicz was the recipient of shotty defense on Tuesday night on the part of third-baseman Adonis Garcia. Foltynewicz went 5.0 innings, allowing 4 runs off of 5 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 3. The 4 runs allowed were not earned. In all, though Foltynewicz struggled with his command at times, this was one of his better starts recently.

The Rockies got out to an early lead in the top of the 1st inning, as Rockies second-baseman DJ LaMahieu scored off an error at 3rd by Adonis Garcia, making the score 1-0. The Rockies weren’t done, as first-baseman Ben Paulsen hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Charlie Blackmon and increasing the lead to 2-0 in favor of the visitors.

The Rockies would not score again until the top of the 4th inning, as DJ LaMahieu singled home Matt McBride and Nick Hundley, making the score 4-0 in favor of Colorado. The Atlanta Braves would finally get on the board in the bottom of the 5th inning, as Nick Markakis singled to bring home Andrelton Simmons, ending the Rockies shutout and making the score 4-1. Markakis recorded his 44th multi-hit game of the season on Tuesday, which leads the Atlanta Braves in that category.
The Atlanta Braves had plenty of chances to comeback in this game. In the bottom of the 7th inning, Pedro Ciriaco grounded into a 5-4-3 double play with two men on and nobody out. The Atlanta Braves would load the bases with 2 outs still in the 7th, but Rockies’ reliever Christian Friedrich struck out Freddie Freeman, ending the frame.

With two out in the bottom of the 8th inning, the Atlanta Braves had another chance to comeback. Jace Peterson singled to left field and a Andrelton Simmons singled up the middle to put two men on for center-fielder Michael Bourn. Bourn struck out, stranding Peterson and Simmons on base. Matt Marksberry allowed a run in the 9th, as DJ LaMahieu recorded his 3rd RBI of the night off a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Daniel Descalso and making the score 5-1.
Cameron Maybin had a rare night off for the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday, and Andrelton Simmons made his return to the lineup after missing two consecutive games with a knee injury. The Braves will look take the series against the Rockies tomorrow in Game 3, as Shelby Miller will attempt to end his winless streak.
