Atlanta Braves Let One Slip, Fall 6-3 To Rockies
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves drop two of three in their home series against the Colorado Rockies by falling 6-3 Wednesday night. Atlanta struggled all series to generate some runs against a surprisingly solid Rockies bullpen.
I really though Shelby Miller was going to end the streak tonight. He looked great through six innings and had a 3-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning. Perhaps it was the long stint in the Atlanta Braves dugout in the bottom of the sixth where Atlanta scored two runs that effected Miller’s rough seventh inning. Shelby allowed four runs to score before getting pulled in favor of Peter Moylan to get that last out.

Miller had some early run support thanks to a force out off the bat of C Christian Bethancourt plating Jonny Gomes in the bottom of the second and back-to-back homers from Gomes and Adonis Garcia in the bottom of the sixth.

The offense did its part to bounce Colorado’s starter Yohan Flande in the sixth, but could not muster a run against the Rockies ‘pen in the final three frames. Atlanta went 0-7 tonight with runners in scoring position and left 13 men on base. Though the first run of the game was certainly manufactured, Atlanta relied on the long ball to get runs across tonight.
The bullpen of the Atlanta Braves wasn’t particularly great tonight either. Besides Moylan’s lone out in the seventh, Edwin Jackson served up a two-run blast to LF Brandon Barnes to make it 6-3 in the eighth and Andrew McKirahan still walked two batters in his ninth inning of work.
Though the Atlanta Braves made things interesting tonight in the bottom of the ninth with pinch-hitter extraordinaire Pedro Ciriaco representing the tying run with two men on, it wasn’t happening as John Axford shut the door to record his 18th save of the season for the Rockies.
Atlanta gets a much-needed day off tomorrow to hopefully gather themselves after going 1-9 in their last 10 ballgames. This was the first time the Colorado Rockies have won a series at Turner Field in 10 seasons. The Atlanta Braves will welcome AL East contender New York Yankees for a three-game set starting on Friday. Braves Country will get the opportunity to see former players like C Brian McCann and 1B Mark Teixeira in the Yankees rare trip to the Ted.

The Miller streak continues. What is going to have to happen for poor Shelby Miller to get a win for the Atlanta Braves? With each loss or no-decision earned by Miller since May 17th, I’ve been in a perpetual state of disbelief that our ace cannot win a ball game for us this summer. Let’s take a mental break tomorrow night and see if our Atlanta Braves can play a competitive series against the New York Yankees this weekend.
