Georgia Bulldogs: Very Much Part of Big 12/SEC Challenge

facebooktwitterreddit

The Georgia Bulldogs Men’s Basketball Team now knows the date, start time and network designation for their Big 12/SEC Challenge game with the Baylor Bears.  Mark Fox’s Georgia Bulldogs will travel to Waco, Texas to take on very strong Baylor team on January 30th at 6PM ET on ESPN2.

According to SEC Sports, the Dawgs are one of ten SEC institutions that will compete in the Big 12/SEC Challenge for the next two seasons.  Alabama, Mississippi State, Missouri, and South Carolina are left out since the Big 12 only has 10 teams entering 2015-16.  They probably need to add two more schools here soon, but that’s a lengthy debate I don’t think we need to get into at this time.

This is great news for an up and coming Georgia Men’s Program.  After not getting an invite in the first two years of The Challenge, the Georgia Bulldogs now join the ranks as one of the better contending teams in the Southeastern Conference.  Winning over 20 games each of the last two seasons, beating up on K-State in the non-conference last year, and making it to the NCAA Tournament in 2015 definitely made this an easy decision for those who put The Challenge together to make.

  • The Big 12 and the SEC benefit from joining forces to combat the long-running ACC/Big 10 Challenge.  Both the Big 12 and SEC have a basketball juggernaut in their conference (Kansas and Kentucky) and many teams often in the AP Top 25 (Baylor, Iowa State and Texas in the Big 12 and Arkansas, Florida, and Tennessee in the SEC).

Getting invited to this glorified series between Power 5 Conferences only adds more credibility to Mark Fox’s program.  Coach Fox can say that his Dawgs team can contend with not only the likes of the Kentucky Wildcats and the Arkansas Razorbacks in the SEC, but also now the Kansas Jayhawks and the Iowa State Cyclones of the Big 12.

Having the opportunity to play a sure-fired Tournament team like the Baylor Bears this fall only helps the Dawgs in the Non-Conference.  What’s interesting about this series is that it will occur during a premeditated bye instituted by both conferences at the end of January, well into the Intra-Conference part of the 2015 Regular season.

It may not seem like a big deal to stand as one of the best 10 teams in the SEC, but it means that Mark Fox’s program has essentially forced out two historically strong basketball programs (Missouri and Mississippi State) to receive the invitation to play in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.

This is another positive step in the right direction for Mark Fox’s Georgia Bulldogs Men’s Program.  Whether or not the Dawgs take down the Bears on January 30th in Waco, it’s great to finally play in the Big 12/SEC Challenge.  The Georgia Bulldogs are trending up for Mark Fox.  Here’s to another 20-win season, another trip to the Big Dance, and possibly an appearance in the AP Top 25 before the end of the 2015-16 Season.  Go Dawgs!
