Davin Bellamy: Poised For A Breakout 2015?
By John Buhler
Davin Bellamy looks to play major snaps in arguably College Football’s deepest outside linebacker group in the country with the 2015 Georgia Bulldogs.
A lot of attention has gone towards three of Georgia’s OLBs and deservedly so. Senior Jordan Jenkins made the All-SEC 1st Team according to the 14 Head Coaches this preseason. Junior Leonard Floyd and Sophomore Lorenzo Carter both appeared on the All-SEC 3rd Team as outside linebackers. But should we continue to overlook RS Sophomore Davin Bellamy?

It would be a big mistake if we did. Bellamy came to UGA as a member of the 2013 Recruiting Class as one of the late, great signings of that group. I remember there being a great deal of uncertainty about where Davin Bellamy wanted to play. He initially committed to Florida State but reneged in favor of coming to Athens to play for Mark Richt and the Georgia Bulldogs.

Dawn of the Dawg
After off the field troubles mired his first year and half with UGA, Davin Bellamy looks poised to have a breakout season for the Dawgs on the outside as a pass rusher. So how will OLB Coach Kevin Sherrer make effective usage of three, potentially four great OLBs if we include Davin in the discussion?
It’s no secret that the Georgia Bulldogs defense thrives on its versatility. Part of what they’re hoping can happen is that Leonard Floyd can play some snaps at both inside linebacker and at STAR so that Georgia can get more than two OLBs on the field at the same time.
Davin Bellamy himself referred to Floyd as “the LeBron James of our defense” due to his inherent versatility. While Senior Leader Jordan Jenkins will likely never leave the field playing the JACK, expect both Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy to get significant playing time on the outside in more than just obvious pass rushing situations.
I’d like to believe that for this unbelievably deep unit to have a tremendous effect on opposing offenses is if one or all the OLBs can learn to contribute in ways other than pass rushing. Who will factor in run stoppage? Can our OLBs drop back into coverage? The proactive decision to move both Floyd and Carter around a bit means that Davin Bellamy will have more in-game opportunities to grow and thrive as a pass rusher.

With two more seasons of eligibility after this season, the Dawgs are grooming the perfect eventual replacements to Jordan Jenkins and Leonard Floyd on the outside, Lorenzo Carter and Davin Bellamy. I’m so thankful that these four pass rushing threats all play for the Red and Black. If they hypothetically suited up for an Eastern foe, Auburn, Tech, or even Alabama this year, I don’t know how I would handle watching our quarterback spend the entire game squirming on the ground.

Only 9 more days until Football Season. It’s surprisingly cool outside for August, Baba O’Riley is on infinite repeat in my brain. I have four years of eligibility left. I’m so fired up for the 2015 Season that I have to catch myself. “No, Buhler. You can’t go back to school and play special teams for the Georgia Bulldogs. You like Clayton Street too much to help the team and one shot to the ribs will likely end in a medical retirement for you.” A boy can dream, right? Forever, Go Dawgs!
