Matt Wisler, Braves Fall Short Against Yanks 3-1

Matt Wisler was impressive, but the Atlanta Braves losing ways continued on Saturday night, falling to the New York Yankees by a final score of 3-1, dropping their fourth consecutive game.

The Braves have now lost 11 out of their last 12 games. Rookie Matt Wisler was impressive on Saturday, a stark contrast to his struggles in a horrific start at Wrigley Field last weekend against the Chicago Cubs. Despite his exceptional performance, the Braves offense once again provided no run support, losing in a close game to the visitors from the Bronx.

The Yankees got out to an early lead in the top of the 1st inning, as Jacoby Ellsbury scored the game’s first run to give the Yanks a 1-0 lead. Matt Wisler pitched remarkably well after allowing the first run of the game, shutting out the Bronx Bombers until the 7th inning when Cameron Maybin misjudged a fly ball to center off the bat of Chase Headley, putting the Yankees’ 3rd-baseman in scoring position. Didi Gregorius had another RBI single in the series, scoring Headley to make the score 2-0.

  • For the first time since July 26th against the St. Louis Cardinals, Matt Wisler was able to pitch into the 7th inning, only allowing 2 earned runs off of 4 hits and 4 walks. It was great to see Matt Wisler rebound from a horrible stretch in the month of August, owning an ERA of 9.13 before tonight’s game.

Yankees’ starter Luis Severino was dominant in Saturday’s contest, pitching 6.0 innings of shutout ball against the Braves while only allowing 4 hits and 3 walks and striking out 5. He now has an ERA of 2.17.

The Braves were finally able to get on the board in the bottom of the 7th, as Christian Bethancourt was able to score off an error by Yankees’ reliever Justin Wilson, closing the gap to 2-1 in favor of the visitors. This would be the only run the Braves would score.

In the top of the 8th inning, Brian McCann continued to enjoy his return to Turner Field, doubling home Chris Young off of Edwin Jackson and making the score 3-1. McCann has had a great series against his former team this weekend, evidenced by his 5 RBI’s thus far.

The Braves had a chance to close the Yankees lead in the bottom of the 8th, as Nick Swisher singled to left field and Christian Bethancourt beat out a close play at first for an infield single. Then with two outs and two men on in a close game, Andrelton Simmons struck out on a questionable third strike call by Home Plate Umpire Mike Estabrook. The Braves would go in order in the 9th against Yankees’ closer Andrew Miller.

The Braves will attempt to salvage a win in the series finale tomorrow, as Julio Teheran goes against former Marlin Nathan Eovaldi. Teheran has pitched well at home this season, owning a 2.55 ERA at Turner Field.
