Williams Perez Optioned to AAA Gwinnett
Following last night’s 15-4 demolition at the hand of the Bronx Bombers, Williams Perez is headed back to AAA Gwinnett after a disappointing stretch of starts dating back to late July.
In his last six starts, Williams Perez clearly lost the swagger he possessed before his stint on the Disabled List in late June and early July, owning a 9.87 ERA. Before his injury, Perez was 4-0 with a 2.66 ERA.

It’s disappointing to see such a promising young pitcher experience these struggles, but alas it is the inherent nature of the game of baseball. Jake Brigham has been recalled from Gwinnett to replace Williams Perez on the roster. Brigham is 0-1 with a 4.80 ERA in 11 games with the Atlanta Braves so far in 2015.

Given how much the young Braves’ staff has struggled so far in 2015 — especially within the past month — it will be interesting to see if Williams Perez can right the ship at AAA and perhaps get another shot in September. With Manny Banuelos on the mend, a September call-up for Perez could see him pitching out of the Braves’ bullpen. Braves’ rookie pitchers Mike Foltynewicz and Matt Wisler have also struggled of late, owning a 9.13 and 7.27 ERA respectively in the month of August.
With Williams Perez failing to command the strike-zone recently, there may be cause to believe that he has worked himself out of the Atlanta Braves’ plan for their starter rotation next year. Prospect Tyrell Jenkins, the other piece of the Shelby Miller for Jason Heyward trade, has found success at both the AA and AAA level thus far this season, notching an impressive 3.00 and 3.70 ERA across both minor league levels in 2015; and will now probably supplant Perez in the eyes of the Braves’ front-office.

Another potential course of action to take with Williams Perez if he is no longer a part of Braves’ long-term vision would be to trade him in the offseason for a much needed bat. Whether Perez remains within the Atlanta Braves organization or is sent packing remains to be seen, but it is safe to assume that he is no longer a part of the Braves’ plans for the starting rotation in 2015. If he can rectify the issues with his command while in the minor leagues, we will probably see him again next month as a member of the relief corps.
The Atlanta Braves host the New York Yankees in Game 2 of their 3-game series tonight at Turner Field, with rookie Matt Wisler opposing Luis Severino.
