Atlanta Braves Crushed by Yankees 20-6, Lose 12th of 13
By John Buhler
The Atlanta Braves are in a complete nosedive, tail spinning in the last half of August. Our baseball club has won one game in the last two weeks, going 1-12 in the last thirteen games.
The New York Yankees clobbered the Atlanta Braves this afternoon 20-6. A casual sports fan may see the score on the bottom ticker of ESPN and think, “Well, it looks like the Atlanta Falcons need to step up their game. Can’t be losing to the New York Jets 20-6.” Then they realize, “Oh wait, this is baseball. What’s going on with the Braves?”

Our usually reliable front of the rotation starter Julio Teheran suffered his second loss of the season at Turner Field this afternoon. The long ball is what got to Teheran, as the Yankees went yard off Julio three times. Teheran lasted just 4.1 innings, allowing 8 earned runs on 9 hits, while walking 3.

Earlier in the series, the Atlanta Braves had to use Jonny Gomes as a pitcher in the top of the ninth inning to save the bullpen. I was hoping for another position player to get a chance on the mound. We will never know if Nick Markakis has a nice breaking ball because the bullpen was disastrous.
Jake Brigham surrendered another 8 earned runs on 9 hits, walking 4 in his 1.2 innings of work. I though he’d be an improvement over Williams Perez but apparently not. Ross Detwiler gave up another 3 earned in his one out of work and Peter Moylan let Alex Rodriguez knock in some runs in his pinch hit appearance. The Yankees scored nine times in the top of the seventh, nine times!
This two-week stretch is the worst I’ve seen the Atlanta Braves since I started reading back in 1995. I kept looking in the stands and wondered why there wasn’t a mass exodus from the Atlanta faithful after this pitiful pitching performance. Then I realized 80% of the crowd were Yankees fans and were having a great time at the Ted. At least some baseball fans in Atlanta had fun today.
The worst part about today’s game is that the Atlanta Braves had a strong day at the plate scoring 6 runs. Adonis Garcia, Andrelton Simmons, Freddie Freeman and Nick Markakis all had multi-hit games for the Braves this afternoon.

Perhaps the greatest silver lining to this game besides it being over is that it wasn’t a Shelby Miller start. The amount of tears that would have fallen in the Atlanta metropolitan region if that were the case would have drastically improved the Chattahoochee River’s water supply.
Miami comes to town for a three-game set this week. Perhaps Shelby Miller achieves that elusive sixth win of the season against the Fish on Tuesday night. We can look forward to that and the Yankees leaving town after today’s deflating loss for our Atlanta Braves.
