Atlanta Braves Face the Fish at Home for Three

The Atlanta Braves are in dire need for a series victory, losing 12 of their last 13 games. Can the Braves take 2 of 3 when the Miami Marlins come to town?

Atlanta (54-76) is only 2.5 games ahead of Miami (52-79) for last in the National League East.  Miami and the Philadelphia Phillies enter Monday night sharing a space in the NL East cellar.  Should Philadelphia play good ball against the first-place New York Mets, the Atlanta Braves could find themselves in dead last in the East if the Braves cannot take a game from the Marlins.

In the series opener, flamethrower Mike Foltynewicz (4-6, 5.71 ERA, 77 K’s) takes on southpaw Chris Narveson (1-1, 7.04 ERA, 15 K’s).  Folty has a more confident approach on the mound of late.  Catcher A.J. Pierzynski praised Foltynewicz’s composure after pitching in hitter friendly Wrigley Field two starts ago.

  • Though he again came away with the loss against the Colorado Rockies in his last start, you could not blame Folty in that contest, as he allowed 0 ER in defeat.  That was the game that 3B Adonis Garcia committed three costly errors at the hot corner for the Atlanta Braves.

Even with the Atlanta Braves massive struggles of late, perhaps Mike Foltynewicz puts it all together in tonight’s start between NL East foes.  Or the hit barrage could continue for our young, promising right-hander.

Tomorrow’s tilt features our hapless ace Shelby Miller (5-12, 2.62 ERA, 143 K’s) and Miami’s left-hander Justin Nicolino (2-2, 3.65 ERA, 12 K’s).  Miami’s rookie has looked impressive thus far, allowing just 6 ER in 20.1 IP.

Miller has not won a game for the Atlanta Braves in his last 18 starts.  The last time Shelby won a game for the Braves it was against the Marlins down in South Beach on May 17th.  Could tomorrow night be the night or does Nicolino’s hot Big League start continue?  We’ll have to wait and see.

In the series finale, the Atlanta Braves are that team, the one that is starting TBD.  This was Williams Perez‘s spot in the rotation before being demoted to AAA Gwinnett.  Given that the rosters expand to 40 on Tuesday, perhaps Perez doesn’t miss his start and takes on yet another Miami Marlins LHP Adam Conley (2-1, 4.96 ERA, 27 K’s).

With three LHPs in this series with the Miami Marlins, expect LF Jonny Gomes to get a few starts as he usually hits lefties pretty well.  Keep an eye on the 15 new guys set to join the Big League roster.  The competitiveness of the Atlanta Braves season is long gone, but we can still (hopefully) enjoy all the new faces making their Major League debuts from now until the 2015 season comes to an end.  Go Braves!
