Manny Banuelos was recalled from his rehab assignment, following a month long stint on the Disabled List, MLB.com’s Mark Bowman reports.

The move was later confirmed by the Atlanta Braves:

Banuelos was sent to the Disabled List in late July to recover from a bone spur in his left elbow. After clearly suffering from discomfort during his final start before being sent to the DL, the Braves front-office and coaching staff were very concerned that Manny Banuelos may have re-injured his surgically repaired left elbow after undergoing Tommy John Surgery in 2013. Manny Banuelos will take Williams Perez‘s spot in the starting rotation, after Perez was demoted to AAA Gwinnett this past weekend.

  • Fortunately for Manny Banuelos and the Atlanta Braves that was not the case, as Banuelos only required a little over a month to recover from this injury. Before heading to the Disable List, Manny Banuelos was arguably one of the Braves’ best pitchers, going 1-2 in for games started while owning a 2.49 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP in 21.2 innings pitched.

The Atlanta Braves will be careful with Banuelos in his first start back from his injury, as the club told the media he would be limited to a 55 pitch limit in Tuesday night’s game against the Miami Marlins. This is to be expected, as the Braves have no need for Banuelos to place extra strain on his arm. This is one benefit of being out of contention in the month of September.

With the Braves’ young core of pitchers struggling, Banuelos has perhaps been the most consistent rookie pitcher when compared to Mike Foltynewicz, Williams Perez and Matt Wisler. Though he only started 4 games this season, Manny Banuelos has demonstrated why the Braves’ front-office was so high on him this past offseason, trading relieveres Chasen Shreve and David Carpenter for the former top prospect in the Yankees’ organization.

Now with the Braves all but eliminated from playoff contention and sitting 19 games out of first place in the National League East, Manny Banuelos and the rest of the young Braves pitchers can continue to develop their confidence without the burden of carrying a team in a playoff race. This mindset will most certainly benefit pitchers like Banuelos and Wisler, as long as the Braves offense can attempt to keep the team competitive in games.

I’m very excited to see Manny Banuelos toe the rubber again. His time in the rotation earlier this summer showed Braves fans what to expect in the future from the rookie southpaw, and how great his potential is as a part of the starting rotation.
