The Atlanta Braves difficult stretch continued on Friday night, as the club lost their 10th consecutive game and their 17th out of their last 18, falling to the Washington Nationals by a final score of 5-2.

This game was as close to a win as the Atlanta Braves have had in a long-time. Julio Teheran set the tone early, as the Atlanta Braves right-hander pitched a spectacular game on Friday. Going into the game with a 6.32 ERA on the road this season, Teheran turned a brilliant performance, going 6.0 innings while allowing 1 earned run off of 4 walks and 4 hits. Teheran would strike out 5 Nationals. Teheran was electric, and his emotion showed all game, pumping his team up and seemingly try to will them to victory.

The Nationals would draw first blood in Friday’s game, as noted Braves’ hater Bryce Harper would give the Nationals a 1-0 lead over the Atlanta Braves with a first-inning solo home-run. Harper’s home-run be the only run that Teheran would surrender in this contest.

  • The Atlanta Braves tied the game at 1  as Nick Markakis scored off of an infield single off the bat of A.J. Pierzynski. The tie between the two innings would go on until the top of the 8th inning.

In the 8th, Freddie Freeman led off the inning with a leadoff double off of Drew Storen. Nick Swisher, pinch hitting for Adonis Garcia (who before this game was 1-25 this season with RISP), hit a single through the right-side of the infield, scoring Freeman to give the Braves a 2-1 lead.

The Nationals would threaten in the 8th, as Bryce Harper drew a leadoff walk from Arodys Vizcaino. After striking out Ryan Zimmerman, Vizcaino induced a lineout off the bat of Clint Robinson, which turned into a double play after Freeman was able to catch the ball and tag the first-base bag.

The Atlanta Braves would threaten in the top of the 9th inning, as Michael Bourn led off the inning with a single off of Jonathan Papelbon. Pedro Ciriaco would then reach base off an infield bunt single, putting 2 men on with nobody out. The Atlanta Braves would be unable to add to their lead as Nick Markakis, Cameron Maybin and Freddie Freeman all recorded outs.

The Atlanta Braves were on the cusp of breaking the 9-game winning streak in the bottom of the 9th inning as Arodys Vizcaino came on for his second inning of work. In his last 17 games, Vizcaino has only allowed 9 hits and 7 walks, not allowing an earned run and striking out 17. Alas, his scoreless streak and the Braves lead would come to an end, as a leadoff double by Yunel Escobar would turn into a run after a two hit single by Matt den Dekker tied the game at 2-2. Peter Moylan relieved Vizcaino, and induced a ground-out off the bat of Anthony Rendon, ending the Nationals threat.

In the 10th, Bryce Harper led off with a single off of Matt Marksberry and Ryan Zimmerman followed with another single up the middle off of Brandon Cunniff, putting 2 men on with nobody out. Michael Taylor would then hit a 3-run homer to deep center field, walking off and giving the Nats a 5-2 victory.

The Atlanta Braves fought tonight harder than they have over the past three-weeks. It was heartbreaking to watch this team be so close to victory with 2-outs in the 9th, only to lose in extra innings.

The Atlanta Braves will try again to end their losing streak as they continue their series with the Washington Nationals tomorrow. Shelby Miller will try to end his 19 game winless streak against Gio Gonzalez. First pitch is set of 7:05 PM.
